First Night

13 Apr

1998-  The clouds rise off of the landscape or a city port in a broken haze of smog and pollution while the sun ascends into the burnt sky- First Night represents the very first piece I ever digitally composed in Bryce.  At this time I was only experimenting with the controls, and probably played with the program for about 2 hours or so before I was satisfied with this.  It’s a simplistic piece compared to many of the other works I would complete later, however it has an element in that it embodies its uniqueness, through the innocence of the work, and it was not methodically planned but simply stumbled upon.

My parents and family were supportive in light of all that had happened to me that year.  It was difficult to adjust initially at first to the prospect of being single again, however after a while I relished in the freedom that I had gained from leaving my ex-girlfriend.  I knew I had hit rock bottom and the only way out was back up.

Breakfast of Champions

2005- The concept came to me after I spoke with some friends about their iconic treatment of the ‘bad guy’ from GI Joe that I had been for Halloween the previous year.  I trimmed up an old photo that had been taken of me as Cobra Commander then gave it the cereal box treatment even down to the type in Photoshop. This piece briefly used this picture as a ‘digital signature’ in the game Counterstrike for a while when I would play online.

A Pioneer’s Vision

06 Apr

2000- Digitally composed in Bryce, with the Pioneer Space Module inserted for character, this piece represented a major step forward in my digital composure, as I began to mix in photographic elements (2D shapes) with 3D design. I came up for the idea for A Pioneer’s Vision after applying a mask over the 3D shape that appeared much like the surface of Mars. I then gave the light ring of space dust around the planet the added effect of the drifting asteroids, and finally dropped in the Pioneer Space Module in the foreground.

We all take our own path, whether its of our own volition or against it we’ll nonetheless go there through the constant drift of change. I pretend to know and understand the Universe, but much like the Pioneer or Voyager, I’m passing through, exploring new places, on a journey to the unknown. There’s these moments in time that bring definitive change, to discover and find a destination, or careen deeper into the vast emptyness, freezing over, beaming a signal back, waiting to be heard. So as I sit here tonight unable to sleep I question: ” Is this my destination or just the beginning?”
