Layered

2007- On this piece, I had the skull taken away and I had to draw it from memory, then apply the model’s face to it. To my instructor’s credit, this allowed me to properly visualize how the flesh adheres to the bone, and gave me excellent topographic assistance in rendering the face accurately. The hair is only lightly indicated, and by now we had moved up to about 6 minute drawings as of this sketch.

I was learning a lot already at Art Center. My understanding of art was coming together quicker than I had thought. Certain connections that I was not making that was giving my work a stale and disjointed view previously, were now discarded through the proper tutliage and instruction I was receiving. I was heavily encouraged by this however much hard work lied ahead and there is much more for me to learn.

Headframe

28 Sep

2007- Right after I completed the 2 minute skulls our instructor now wanted us to draw the model’s head, but first we had to frame it on the skull we had drawn. It was at this point that my head drawings really began to ‘take shape’ persay. When I came to Art Center, I really wanted to ‘relearn’ how to draw properly. I had been ignoring the frame when drawing the face in the past and would misplace details.  this was a  day full of revealing information and techniques where I believe I’d look back and realize when the light finally came on.

Quick Skulls

27 Sep

2007- After arriving in Pasadena with little more than I could cramp into my car, I had a stroke of good luck and found housing in a decent part of town about 5 miles from campus. Things came together quickly and before I knew it school had started at Art Center. The instructors are demanding and there is homework for every class every week. It took me a little while but after settling in my work began to take shape.

With 2 minutes to draw a skull I broke out these two Quick Skull studies.  The speed at which I directed these were surprisingly with little effort. In general on this day in class I began to finally see and comprehend the giagantic leaps forward that my work had begun to take through my hard work and determination.
