Pitts, Chester (2)

Acquired: In Person, 6/10/11, 610 Houston Fan Fest III
See Also: Chester Pitts

Chester Pitts is considered the first ironman of the Houston Texans and has garnered the nickname “Mr. Texan” from fans. Outside of former kicker Kris Brown, Pitts had logged the most games played in a row on the team roster with 114 games started. He saw the beginnings of the franchise, as one of the team’s second round draft choice in 2002 after David Carr and Jabar Gaffney.  He’d play through the team’s tenure under Dom Capers and Charlie Casserly, and into the current Kubiak era- a total of seven solid seasons, before 2 games into his 8th he suffered a catastrophic injury and spent the rest of 2009 on IR. As it was a contract year, the team allowed him to bolt via free agency to the Seattle Seahawks for 2010.  Chester started 5 games for the Seahawks, and made the playoffs for the first time in his career.

I slid over to Chester’s line at Fan Fest, after striking out on Danieal Manning, whose line was closing. I waited maybe two minutes before I was up front and talked to him a little bit. When I asked him if he was still with Seattle he told me that he was pretty much retired now. Pitts was looking noticeably slimmer and later admitted he had lost about 30 pounds off of his playing weight. He’s now working as a financial advisor and is an advocate for better fiscal responsibility by former NFL players.

I had a card for Chester, but he had already signed it. No other manufacturer other than Score ever made one of Chester in his tenure as a Texan. Probably a slight on him because he played on such horrible lines. Still he was a solid blocker for his time with the team and I hope he gets the recognition he deserves for his time with the Texans organization.

Armstrong, Derick

Card: Playoff Contenders 2004
Acquired: 2012, Target Authentic Memorabilia Autograph Edition

After graduating from Arkansas-Monticelo, Derick Armstrong wanted to continue his football career, so he packed his bags and went to play in the CFL for the Edmonton Eskimos in 2001. After a solid 2002, when he put up 1104 yards in 18 games, the Houston Texans would sign him in 2003 to a free agent contract. He’d have his best season in 2005 connecting with David Carr for 29 receptions, 415 yards, and a TD. After a disastrous 2005 for the Texans, Armstrong decided to return to the CFL. Playing for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Armstrong played 4 seasons for them, recording back to back 1,000+ yard seasons in 2007 and 2008. Designated the team’s franchise ‘Import Player’ Armstrong refused to play. Winnipeg benched Derick and then cut him in 2010. Derick played one final season splitting time between the Lions with the Eskimos in 2010. Armstrong is a two time CFL All Star, earning honors in 2002 and 2007.

Aldridge, Anthony “Quick-Six”

Card: Bowman Sterling 2008
Acquired: 2012, Target Authentic Autograph Memorabilia

Anthony Aldridge was originally recruited as a wide receiver to the University of Houston in 2005, but coaches liked the potential that “Quick-Six” displayed at runningback and put him to work there. In 2006, he posted an incredible 959 yards on 95 attempts, an NCAA record 10.1 rush per attempt. Taking over fulltime in 2007, Anthony went to work posting 1,597 yards, 6.2 YPC, and 16 touchdowns. A curiosity to the NFL due to his size, at 5’9″, 175 lbs, it was assumed that he could not shoulder the workhorse load needed for a full 16 game schedule. The Broncos signed Aldridge to a free agent contract in 2008 as a scatback. After spending the entire 2008 season on IR, the Broncos waived him in 2009. Both the Redskins and Texans entertained Quick-Six that season, before he landed on the roster of the Redskins in 2010 as a WR. Anthony later moved on to the Canadian Football League signing with the Toronto Argonauts as a practice squad member, but was released in November of that year. Currently Anthony is a free agent.
