Cody, Shaun

Card: Topps Heritage 2006
Acquired: TTM 2009, Texans Blitz

At 6’4″, 306 Shaun Cody was a member of  USC, originally drafted by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 2005 draft.  A 4 year starter for the Trojans, he was a consensus All- American and had 21 sacks, 8 blocked field goals and 31.5 total tackles for losses for the team.  The Lions slotted him in at defensive tackle but he’d only start 11 games over 4 years, unable to scale the team’s depth chart playing under 3 different defensive coaches.  Detroit would expose him during free agency in 2009 and the Texans would sign him to play left defensive tackle with Travis Johnson on the way out. In those 2 seasons for the Texans Shaun has made .5 sacks, 1 pass defensed, and 33 tackles.

After the Texans decided to blow up their defense and shift back to the 3-4, new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is adamant that he can rotate Shaun Cody in at nose tackle as an undersized speed rusher (in the model of Jay Ratliff from Dallas), and has gone so far as to sign him to a 2 year extension in 2011.  A high motor lineman with a fast first step, the hope is Shaun’s best days are still ahead of him,  but he needs to continue to bulk up and improve on his fundamentals. At the time of this post he was being employed in a platoon with Earl Mitchell.

Shaun has a tattoo of ‘SC’ on his bicep that is in the same typography as USC. While it was rumored that this was a tribute to his former Alma Mater, it indeed has been reported it is merely an abbreviation of his name.

Molden, Antwaun

Card: Bowman 2008
Acquired: TTM 2009, Texans Blitz

Promising cornerback from Eastern Kentucky- Antwaun Molden was drafted in the 3rd round by the Houston Texans in the 2008 draft. A series of unrelated injuries have limited the young, rangy defensive back from participating with the team since being drafted. In 2008 he made a fumble recovery and a tackle, and in 2010 he made 6 tackles. He’s played primarily on special teams for the Texans, but has seen little or no time on the field in the secondary.

With the team blowing up its defense after the 2010 season because of an extremely porous secondary, it is suspected that it is do or die time for Antwaun as the team will be looking to shake things up. Antwaun’s future may lie eventually at safety as this former track man has the speed to play the position, but has yet to find the place he fits best in the Texans’ defense.

UPDATE: On late Tuesday, August 30th, 2011, Antwaun would be among the Texans first round of cuts and would be claimed by the Patriots.

Anderson, David “Dave” (2)

Acquired: 2010

So after meeting Dave a few months prior after the 2009 season concluded, he had his brother deliver this humorous autograph to me. A running joke after I had gained some weight is that I looked like Shrek and since “Shrek 3d” had come out earlier that year, he decided to lampoon me a bit. Funny guy Dave. Funny Guy. Dave didn’t mind signing a bunch of cards for me, and told me if I get anymore to feel free to send them to him. I sent him… 16.

In 2011, after the protracted lockout, Dave signed with the Denver Broncos, but lost out in training camp.  The Texans liked him and resigned  him later that season.
