Carthon, Maurice

The season had ended and I got a letter two weeks later stuffed with cards from the Indianapolis Colts! For a team that finished- 1-15, it still made me super happy to get these cards from the players.  Maurice Carthon was in that lot.  Initially unheralded Maurice Carthon- blocking fullback to the stars- would be signed by the upstart USFL, where he’d block for the New Jersey Generals and… football rushing record holder Herschel Walker. After the 1985 season, Carthon didn’t miss a beat jumping straight to the New York Giants.  A strong inside runner with excellent run blocking skills and impressive pass protection ability, Maurice would play for the Giants primarily during the Bill Parcells era winning a championship ring in both SuperBowls XXI and XXV. Carthon would play one season for the Colts in 1992 where I’d get his autograph, and then retire. Since then Maurice has spent his entire post playing career as an assistant in the NFL with the Patriots, Jets, Lions, Cowboys, Browns, Cardinals, and as of this post in 2010 with the Chiefs. He is considered an apostle of the Parcells’ coaching tree working for Bill at three different teams.

Langhorne, Reggie

In 1985, the Cleveland Browns selected Reggie Langhorne out of little known Elizabeth City State College in the 7th round to be paired along with new quarterback Bernie Kosar. Overall the ’85 draft is well regarded, and Langhorne would be drafted along with such notable wide receiver talent as Andre Reed and Eric Martin.  After a rough first season, Reggie would get more playing time in 1986 and would provide a long bomb threat for the team, averaging 17.4 yards a catch on 39 receptions, but perhaps his best season with the Browns was in 1988 where he would catch 7 touchdowns on 57 receptions. Langhorne would continue to provide the team with help from the slot, but in 1992 hopped over to Indianapolis via Plan B. Reggie would immediately help out young quarterback Jeff George over the next two seasons, recording a career high 1038 yards in 1993 – leading the AFC in receptions. After the team only won 4 games that season, the Colts would purge their veteran roster along with him. Langhorne would retire but is most well remembered by fans for his playing time with the Cleveland Browns and the touchdown he caught against the Oilers to help them make the playoffs in 1988.

Since football Reggie has managed over a variety of charitable activities including former teammate Eddie Johnson’s Charitable Fund and does commentary on Browns games for WOIO. In 2010, Reggie was badly injured in a biking accident when he was hit by a car. He broke his clavicle, fibula, a rib and had a massive concussion, and will be in physical therapy for 7 to 9 months. Ironically this injury post football put him out of commission longer than any injury he got while he was playing.

Parker, Anthony

Anthony Parker was a quick defensive back at Arizona State with impressive speed and among college’s best return men when an injury sidelined him before his senior season. After leaving Arizona State, Parker would be signed by the Colts suiting up for 1 contest notching a tackle in 1989.

Sitting out a year after not making the Jets roster in 1990, Parker was then drafted in the first round of the WLAF player allocation draft in 1991 by the New York- New Jersey Knights where he would make his mark. Parker in 10 games for the Knights made an incredible 11 interceptions for 270 yards and 2 touchdowns. His league leading numbers would help the team make the playoffs in their inaugural season. Anthony would be the only player named unanimously to the All-World Team and was considered the #1 prospect from the WLAF. He would also tie for the league honor of defensive MVP.

Returning back to the NFL, Parker would sign with the Chicago Bears ultimately finishing out with the Kansas City Chiefs suiting up for 2 games. In 1992 Anthony would finally get the shot starting two games for the Vikings- making 3 interceptions. He’d stay there through 1994 before signing with the St. Louis Rams, starting 16 games that season and 14 in the following year in 1996. Parker would also see some time as a punt returner. Anthony would finish out his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1998 posting 4 career interception returns for touchdowns. He finished his NFL career starting 69 games with 15 interceptions for 251 yards and 4 touchdowns and a long of 94 yards- really helping to justify to me one of the major reasons why the WLAF existed.  Below are his statistics from the 1991 WLAF season.
