Archie Manning’s legacy has been somewhat embellished and romanticized over the years, thanks partly in part to the successes of his pro quarterback sons Peyton and Eli who have achieved Super Bowl success over their long careers.  While Manning played during the prime of the notorious ‘Dead Ball Era’, surrounded frequently by a misfit cast of players, he himself only had 2 seasons in his career where he threw more TDs to interceptions, while also posting a woeful 35-101-3 career record as a starting quarterback.  It should be noted that he led the NFL in attempts (448) and completions (230) in 1972, and earned Pro Bowl nominations in both 1978 and 1979.  His best season came at the expense at his team’s record in 1980. He’d throw for 3,716 yards and 23 TDs on 509 attempts, as the Saints stunk it up to a 1-15 record. One would think that somebody like Bobby Herbert might have made the cut over Manning, but it’s understandable that Archie’s sheer numbers and character are what endears him to this set.

During the 1982 season, the New Orleans Saints parted ways with Archie, trading him to the Houston Oilers for offensive lineman Leon Gray. He’d play there for roughly 16 games before being traded to the Minnesota Vikings with Dave Casper during the 1983 season, in exchange for two 1984 draft choices.  After the 1984 season, Manning retired. His journeyman years with the Oilers and Vikings are viewed much like other players who are associated only with their original long tenured franchise and are largely ignored.

Manning’s true strength is his character. Despite playing for some horrid teams, he was always well respected by teammates and foes alike around the league.  Through 2015, Archie has been a long time commentator on Saints games, and is a solid TTM bet. For some reason however I failed on my first attempt, and upon completion of my second try- it was slightly smudged. With Archie’s autograph in hand, the family trifecta of Archie, Eli, and Peyton has also been completed.

Bobby was considered one of the best centers in the country, playing 3 years for Pitt and a final year at Baylor. It made sense to Sign to play in the SWC since he was from Texas. Unfortunately in that final year at Baylor (1988), knee injuries sidelined him for a good portion of the season.

Undeterred, Bobby signed with the Oilers as an undrafted free agent in 1989, but was cut before the beginning of the season. Sign was definitely a WLAF candidate, and the Saints signed him in 1991 and sent him to the WLAF for experience.  The Barcelona Dragons signed him via the enhancement allocation draft.  He’d anchor down an impressive offensive line along with Barry Voorhess and Scott Adams. For the season the line only allowed 22 sacks- good for second best in the league. This allowed the team to advance all the way to World Bowl I against the London Monarchs.  Bobby returned to the WLAF for 1992, and helped the Dragons win the division. Barcelona lost in the playoffs again to the eventual champions- this time to the Sacramento Surge 17-15.

Bobby returned to the Dallas area. After a bit of detective work I found that he is working for a high end clothier and tailor of quality suits.  I sent this card to him via the store where he has built himself quite a reputation for customer service. He sent me back a nice note along with the signed card, where he told me that he was blessed to play in the WLAF and sad when the league decided to go on hiatus after the 1992 season.

Beavers, Larry Jr.

Larry Beavers is an outstanding talent in the Arena Football League. He attended a small Division III school, Wesley College in Delaware. There Beavers set the NCAA record for career kick return touchdows with a whopping 10.  He also demonstrated a knack for the ball, finishing second in school history with 2,366 yards.

He went undrafted in 2009 but was signed by the Carolina Panthers. Unfortunately Beavers was among the final cuts that preseason by the squad. The following year Larry was signed by the New Orleans Saints, but again was cut in the offseason. In 2011, he signed with the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League, but quickly decided to take his talents to the CFL, landing on the roster of the Edmonton Eskimos.  Beavers returned to the Arena leagues the following year and was an offseason addition to the Pittsburgh Power.

It was in 2013 that Larry joined the New Orleans Voodoo, and that’s where he’s made an impressive impact. He’d earn second team All-Arena Team Honors in 2014 as a kick returner cracking the 1,000 yard barrier both as a receiver and as a kick returner. Larry was assigned to the expansion Las Vegas Outlaws for 2015, but ended up rubberbanding back to the Voodoo before the season was out, scoring 2 more TDs on kick returns.  The Voodoo (and the Outlaws) were taken over by the league before the conclusion of the season.

I had gotten a few customs I had made autographed by players in the league over Twitter. Impressed with Beaver’s play in the finale against San Antonio I created this custom of him and asked him if he’d like one, to which he gleefully signed this one for me in about 2 weeks.
