Woodrum, Josh

Josh Woodrum was quarterback for the Liberty Flames from 2012-2015. He finished his college career going 833/1304 for 10,266 yards with 61 TDs to 30 interceptions. He was one of only two mid-major QBs to be invited to the NFL combine- with the other being Carson Wentz. Although Woodrum did turn some heads, he was not selected in the 2016 NFL Draft.

He’d be a free agent signee of the New York Giants, and then see time on the rosters of the Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns. Obviously on the radar of a lot of teams but unable to latch onto a roster- Josh signed with the Salt Lake City Stallions of the AAF in 2018.

The AAF then decided that a few teams were stockpiling talent at QB- so in order to fairly distribute the talent they came up with the Protect or Pick QB Draft. The Stallions liked what they had, so they selected Josh with their first pick in the QB Draft (8th overall). Involved in a QB battle with BJ Daniels, Woodrum became the defacto starter after Daniels suffered a season ending injury during the preseason.

Josh started 7 games for the Stallions, and finished with 1,449 yards on 146/227 passing, 6 TDs to 8 interceptions. He finished second in the league, completing 64.3% of his passes, and overall as the 4th highest rated QB with a 76.4 QB Rating.

He joined the Redskins after the AAF folded but did not make the squad. Currently he is a free agent.

Well it took a while for me to find Josh, but after some persistence, I was able to track him down. I sent to him a mere days before the league folded, so I reloaded and tried him with the Redskins, where I failed again. Luckily Mark (Mark’s Signing Bonus) and I worked together to corner the AAF market and he had already gotten him at his home address- so technically the 3rd try was the charm here.

Gado, Samkon

Samkon Gado is one of those rare athletes who wasn’t really on the radar of scouts going into his final year playing college ball. In fact he was looking forward more to becoming a doctor than playing football, but as fate would have it, nearly the entire Liberty runningback corps was depleted, and Samkon stepped in and ran for 901 yards on 138 carries, scoring 11 TDs in 9 games.

It was all about being at the right place, at the right time for Samkon, and it seemed that scouts identified his intangible talent for rising to the occasion. After going undrafted in 2005, he was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad for a brief time. A month or two later, he was signed by the Packers. Then nearly the entire runningback stable went down one by one due to injury. First Ahman Green, then Najeh Davenport, and then finally Tony Fisher.

Gado saw extensive playing time in their absence after taking the starting runningback role. He’d have 3 100 yard efforts during the season, and set a franchise rookie record rushing for 171 yards against the Lions. Ultimately he too would end his season on injured reserve.

With new management in town for 2006, the Packers traded Gado to the Houston Texans after Week 1 of the season for Vernand Morency. The Texans were shoring up their runningback depth behind Ron Dayne and Wali Lundy. During the season he’d pitch back to back 60 yard efforts against Jacksonville and Buffalo.

In 2007, Ahman Green also joined the Texans runningback committee, and was the starter above Dayne. Gado beat out Lundy to make the final squad, scoring his first TD with the Texans in the season opener against the Colts.

He’d be cut at the end of October, and signed with the Miami Dolphins, after starting RB Ronnie Brown went down. Again, backup Ricky Williams, then himself also was fallen by injury, so Samkon had to step in again. He’d help contribute to the Dolphins only win on the 2007 season.

Samkon then played for the St. Louis Rams over the next two seasons, but saw little action outside of special teams. In 2010 he signed with the Tennessee Titans but did not make the final roster.

Samkon finished his medical degree and now is a doctor at Saint Louis University Hospital as part of the Otolaryngology program.

Eaglin, Greg

Defensive back Greg Eaglin (#26) graces the front of this TV Schedule card featuring the San Antonio Riders versus the Ohio Glory in their 1992 preseason matchup. The return envelope itself appeared to have been run over by a car and then mangled by a dog, but somehow it got back to me. -Regardless of the condition of the card, I am thankful that Greg took the time to sign. As of 2019, Greg resides in the Dallas, Tx area.

Defensive back Greg Eaglin started his college career at Texas, but transferred to University of Arkansas- Pine Bluff.

He was a free agent signee of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1991, but did not make the squad. Greg was selected by the San Antonio Riders of the World League in 1992 as their 28th selection. While with the Riders he intercepted one pass- during the infamous hailstorm game against the Ohio Glory, when a Pat O’Hara pass deflected off of offensive lineman Eric Harmon. He ended the season on the roster of the Frankfurt Galaxy.

Greg joined the CFL in 1993 when he signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He’d finish out the season on the roster of the Calgary Stampeders but was released in July of 1994. Greg resigned with the Ti-Cats, and made an instant impact recording 5 interceptions in perhaps his best season as a pro. He’d sign with the Toronto Argonauts in ’95 and play with them until midway through the 1996 season. He’d then finish his career in the CFL back where he started again- back with the Ti-Cats.

In 1997, Eaglin played one lone season in the Arena leagues for the Iowa Barnstormers as a WR-LB.
