Delaire, Ryan

sage15 delaireCard: Sage Hit 2015 (213/250)
Acquired: 2015, Box Breaker

Ryan Delaire played at the University of Massachusetts for his first two collegiate seasons. He played in 18 games before transferring, earning 25 tackles and 2.5 sacks at defensive end.  He transferred to Towson where he posted 32 tackles for loss, 22.5 sacks and five forced fumbles.  Delaire was invited to the combine and posted decent numbers, running a 4.97 40 and bench pressing 220 23 times.  He was expected to be drafted in probably the 6th or 7th round, but instead became a high-priority free agent after the 2015 draft.  A tweener, Delaire would fit in comfortably with the right scheme as a 3-4 outside linebacker or a defensive end.

In early May 2015 he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Later he’d be signed off the Redskins practice squad and joined the Carolina Panthers that year. As a backup in 9 games he had 8 tackles and 2.5 sacks during his rookie year.  In 2016, Ryan saw spot duty in 6 games, with 6 tackles, a sack, and 1 pass defended, but a knee injury ended his season prematurely. Currently in 2017, he’s a free agent.

I reached into the open mailbox right before the 2016 Memorial Weekend Flood III, and found a soaked self addressed stamped envelope.  I had to medically remove the three cards that had
slid slightly out of plastic sleeve, from the envelope.  Some moisture was on the cards, but after dabbing them off, they were in surprisingly good condition, and the autographs were not harmed.

pset92 rsmithThe 1992 Action Packed Rookies & Stars was among my favorites during that early heyday of collecting. I had already gotten Rod Smith in a Patriots blitz I did in 1992 before the set came out. (Back then you could send a stack of cards to a bad NFL team and they’d typically respond by signing most of your stuff.) A great action shot here, I had been wanting to come back and get this one for a while. The ProSet and Classic cards were gravy on top. ProSet still had some nice action photos, sans the bad design and company logo.

Johnson, Keyshawn

Lance came through with this one and gave me a copy of a Sports Illustrated autographed by none other than Keyshawn Johnson. I am neither a fan of EBay purchases or autographed magazines, but I won’t look this gift horse in the mouth. At the time he also gave me a certified Billy Sims autographed card as well. I always give extras whenever I can to friends in a pay it forward maneuver, so it’s always nice to get something back in return.

Keshawn Johnson came off the board #1 overall (first time since Irving Fryar, 1987) in the wide receiver deep 1996 draft. Selected by the New York Jets, Johnson recorded his first two 1,000+ yard seasons in 1998 and 1999, earning him ProBowl berths in both years. He’d be traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2000, and have the best season of his career in 2001, when he posted 106 receptions for 1266 yards, earning his 3rd and final Pro Bowl berth. Keshawn posted his last 1,000 yard season and won the Super Bowl in 2002.  He was traded to the Cowboys in 2004, narrowly missing the 1,000 yard mark at the end of the year.  Johnson played one final season in 2006 with the Panthers, retiring after the season.

Post playing days, Keshawn has been an in studio analyst and was the first celebrity voted out of Dancing With the Stars -17th Season.
