Musgrave, Bill

Acquired: In Person 1991, Dallas Cowboys Training Camp

The heir to Chris Miller for the Oregon Ducks, Bill Musgrave enjoyed an excellent college playing career. With a logger jam at quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, Musgrave would not make the team roster after being drafted by them in 4th round of the 1991 draft. He’d sign with the San Fransisco 49ers and he’d post a 71 quarterback rating throwing 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. He’d stay with the 49ers through 1994 and then sign with the Denver Broncos staying there through the 1996 season. Bill jumped almost immediately into coaching where he has remained since, working a season a piece for the Raiders and Eagles, and two for the Panthers. Musgrave returned back to the college ranks in 2001 tutoring future Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub at UVA. Again he’d surface in the pros with the Jaguars for the next two seasons through 2004 and the Redskins for 2005. Musgrave later spent the most time with the Atlanta Falcons from 2006 – 2010, -later signed with the Minnesota Vikings in 2011 to be offensive coordinator. Musgrave experienced his first offensive play calling with the Eagles and Ray Rhodes, so he probably is a member of the Rhodes’ coaching tree.

McGlockton, Chester (1969-2011)

Before there was Albert Haynesworth, there was Chester McGlockton…  A man-mountain at 6-3, 334, McGlockton would be drafted in the first round by the Los Angeles Raiders with the 16th overall pick in 1991. After his rookie season where he only played 10 games,  Chester’s 1992 was nothing short of dominant with 7 sacks, 78 tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception. It would be the start of 3 straight All Pro and Pro Bowl nominations for the defensive tackle. He’d continue to dominate, making a career high 9.5 sacks in 1993. He’d follow this up with great performances in 1994, 1995 and 1996.  Well Chester got embroiled in a contract dispute with the Raiders in 1997. He’d attend training camp in that season, but frustrated with his contract with the Raiders Chester would openly proclaim how he was going to be on the Chiefs next season. When the Raiders showed up at Cowboys camp that season, he even told me as he was signing his Raiders card how he should be in a Chiefs uniform on the card. After a less inspired 1997, where Chester would still get a Pro Bowl nod, he cashed in for big money signing with Kansas City in 1998. Oddly the team shifted him to defensive end but the move would not pan out. He’d be shelved after 10 games with back problems.  They’d shift him back inside for 1999 and 2000 where he made 4.5 sacks the latter season, and sign with the Broncos at the conclusion of the season. McGlocton would play for the Broncos in 2001 and 2002, and as a reserve for the Jets in 2003 before retiring.

Since football, Chester has gotten involved in coaching, briefly working at the University of Tennessee as an intern and at Chabot College before joining Stanford’s defensive staff as a defensive line coach in 2010.  He has effectively changed his life after discovering coaching, and although he suffered a malaise of injuries that he still feels the everyday effects of, and getting lapband surgery in 2008, Chester is working in the career he loves most -coaching football.

UPDATE 11/30/11-  Chester McGlocton passed away early Wednesday morning reportedly from a heart attack. He was 42.

Furrer, Will

Will Furrer was a top line quarterback for Virginia Tech in the early 90s. Drafted by the Chicago Bears  in the 4th round of the 1992 draft, he was thought at some points to be the club’s quarterback of the future, but after a rough first season, he’d find himself on the street after a rough 2 games that season. He would sit at the #3 slot of the Cardinals and Broncos rosters, not attempting a pass in 1993 or 1994. I’d get his autograph in 1995 when he’d sign with the Houston Oilers, backing up Chris Chandler at quarterback. With Chris, injuries always seemed to take their toll on him, so Will would eventually get his shot.  After not making the roster of the Oilers the next season, Furrer would sit out for a season, but in the by 1995 he was getting time in the reformed NFLE playing for the Amsterdam Admirals where he’d play through the 1996 season. In 1996, he’d throw for 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Will would make his mark with the franchise setting career marks for most attempts in a season with 368. Furrer would lead the NFLE in most quarterback stats that season. He’d return to the NFL in 1997 and be 3rd string quarterback for the St. Louis Rams.  After the season, Furrer would retire. Since that time Will Furrer has been involved with IF Marketing & Advertising in partnership with Tony Boselli and Jeff Novak out of Georgetown, Texas.  Below are his NFLE statistics.
