Jeff Donaldson was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the 9th round of the 1984 draft out of Colorado. By 1986, he was starting at free safety for the Oilers in Jerry Glanville‘s defense. An aggressive, hard hitter, and good special teams performer, Donaldson had a career high 110 tackles that season. He was a great example of the ‘House of Pain’ moniker that the Oilers embraced during the late 80’s.  In 1990, with changes coming for the Houston Oilers organization, Donaldson was left exposed Plan B by the team. He’d sign with the Kansas City Chiefs that season.  He’d finish his tenure on the Oilers with 446 tackles.

The Oilers in 1989 had been thoroughly trounced by the Chiefs, and in that game Houston’s special teams were exposed almost as badly as the offense. How much a year can change things, as the Oilers in 1990 under Jack Pardee went into Arrowhead, and Kansas City had no answers for the Run ‘N Shoot offense. Warren Moon threw for 527 yards that day, including an 87 yarder to Haywood
Jeffires right in front of Donaldson.

After the season, Donaldson reunited with Jerry in Atlanta for the 1991 season. He’d play with the Falcons through the 1993 season and retire. He currently lives in Colorado. I had tried to get Donaldson’s autograph back in… 2011, but did not receive a response. He has been responding to TTM requests sporadically as of late, but I figured that I might as well knock him out via a large lot acquisition instead.

Lance and I arrived at the 2015 Houston Texans Draft Party with high hopes, but were ultimately disappointed when we didn’t have cards of the Ambassadors who showed up, and the players I did have a card of were only taking photo ops. Queue the Astrodome air raid siren, because Andre Ware came to the rescue.

As Lance and I made our way towards the photo op booth, I heard a familiar voice on TV. Andre Ware was being interviewed on Fox Spots Southwest. Recognizing that the broadcast was taking place in the stadium, I walked over to one of the people working at the stadium and asked them where Andre was. The stadium employees identified it as being at radio row where only the VIP fans were allowed. We got as close as the elevator, and after borrowing a pen and waiting for about 15 minutes, Lance and I decided to locate the ground floor exit of the VIP area to get a better vantage point.  We walked for about 5 minutes, and emerging out of the crowd from the other direction, wasudlgd11 ware Andre Ware. Kudos to Andre for cheerfully signing 2 cards for me and Lance, even though he had his hands full with two kids by his side and all their stuff.

I can’t encourage collectors enough to build out a compact and expanded box of cards that covers the full gamut of players, former players, and sports personalities. With Andre covering the Texans on the radio as a color commentator and also being  a local legend, it made sense to have a few extras on the off chance he did make an appearance.  Otherwise  these are great cards of Ware, and leaves me with only a handful of extras that I would love to have autographed for my collection.

James Lofton has a great reputation as a fabulous TTM signer. His normal cost is $10.00 per flat, but like many players, he will sign for as little as $5.00 a card. After I had gotten James many years ago in person at Dallas Cowboys’ training camp, I had piled up a significant number of really nice cards of the Hall of Fame player. The big incentive was this really nice Upper Deck Marquee Matchups card that I had previously gotten signed by Drew Pearson in person.
Spurred on by the number of responses I was seeing, I decided to go ahead and shoot a few cards out with a donation. It didn’t take but a week for the Hall of Famer to respond signing all 4 of my cards, throwing in the additional Hall of Fame card. Lofton’s autograph is slightly different from his 1992 signature. It is missing the star in the loop of the ‘J’ and the number 80 inside the ‘L’. He was also kind enough to inscribe each card with his Hall of Fame year. Still it looks legitimate enough that I believe it is from him and not a ghost signer.
