Ambrose, Ashley

As the 1992 draft dawned, the Colts determined to fix their woeful defense, drafted Steve Emtman and Quentin Coryatt with the first two picks of the draft. They’d turn around at the top of round 2 and grab 1992 Ashley Ambrose from Mississippi Valley State.  He was a nice find at the top of round 2- well once he left the Colts. Over 4 seasons, from 1992-1995 Ashley would make 5 interceptions, 9 fumble recoveries and 94 tackles.

In 1996 Ashley signed with the Bengals, and immediately contributed with an All Pro season. Starting all 16 games for the first time in his career Ashley made 8 picks and 44 tackles. Ambrose would never be on the bench again for the remainder of his career. He’d play for the Bengals 2 more seasons before signing with the New Orleans Saints, making 6 more picks, before heading out to Atlanta for 4 more seasons. In Atlanta, Ambrose would make 12 interceptions for 207 yards, before heading back to New Orleans for the 2003 and 2004 season before retiring.

Ambrose has gone into coaching where he worked for the Colorado Buffaloes. Currently Ashley is defensive backs coach at California. I’ve dug up a few cards of Ashley, that I missed out on sending to him back in 1992 including his Action Packed Rookies and GameDay cards that I may send to him on a later date.

Smith, Rod (DB)

I got Rod’s autograph as part of a blitz of the New England Patriots back in the early 90s. He signed the card and put “Go Irish!” on it.  Drafted in the second round of the 1992 draft, Rod was a bit undersized at 5’11”, but made up for it with his explosive hitting and speed. A track man, Smith possessed great closing speed and was once clocked at 6.35 in the 55.  During his time with the Irish, Smith even took some time in starting 7 games at strong safety, but would see his time in the NFL at corner. He made one pick his rookie year for the Patsies in 1992, and 2 in 1994, playing mainly on special-teams.

In 1995, Rod was left exposed by the Patriots and was selected by the Carolina Panthers in their expansion draft. He was the Panthers’ first selection. Smith would sign with the Vikings in 1996, but quickly returned to the Panthers during that season. He’d make 2 interceptions in 1998 and finish out the season with the Packers where he retired after the season.

Since retiring, Smith has done some charity work, was the President of the Alumni Chapter of NFL players in the Carolina area, and recently appeared at a NASCAR Track Walk event as the Grand Marshall in 2011.

(Rod Smith from Notre Dame is not to be confused with the CB with the same name drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1st round during the 80s or the WR drafted by the Denver Broncos in 1994.)

Bowden, Joe

Joe Bowden was a talent coming out of OU back in 1992, and going in the 5th round to the Houston Oilers, I knew they had gotten him at a bargain price. At 5’11”, 230 the knock on Joe was that he was undersized to play linebacker, but Bowden certainly made up for it with a motor that never quit. He didn’t start any games in 1992, but in 1993 under Buddy Ryan got to start in 6 games, making a sack, fumble recovery and 28 tackles. Over the years the team transitioned to Tennessee and in 1999 Bowden would start 15 games at right linebacker, making 3.5 sacks, 1 interception, 2 FF and 36 tackles.  He’d sign with Dallas in 2000, and but not start any games and retire shortly afterwards.

At least when he played, Joe was an excellent signer in person. I sent out again for him in 2010, hoping to get what was left of my cards of him signed, however as of the time of this post, he has not responded from his work at Central Oklahoma University where he coaches.
