White, Robb

Originally hailing from Amberdeen, South Dakota, homegrown Robb White went collegiality to South Dakota University. By the time he left the Coyotes, Robb would become one of the best defensive tackles to play at the college. Starting the final 25 games over his career with the team, Robb was a two-time All-North Central Conference selection both in 1986 and 1987. He finished his career at the college with 206 tackles, 3 fumble recoveries, 15 sacks, and 18 tackles for loss.

Robb went undrafted but was signed by the Washington Redskins in 1988,  finishing the season on the roster of the New York Giants. He’d remain with the Giants through the 1989 season, and be signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1991. As part of the NFL Enhancement Program allocating players to the WLAF, Robb joined the San Antonio Riders for the 1992 season. A member of quite a formidable front, he teamed up with Willie Fears, Chris Thienamen, and Dick Chapura to control the trenches in the Riders 3-4 defense.  He’d make  4 sacks for the team that season. With the CFL inheriting most of the talent from the WLAF after the World League’s suspension, Robb went on to play for the Sacramento Gold Miners from 1993 to 1994.

Robb has worked in the fluid lubrication industry for some time, and I had been chasing him as members of the Riders franchise take precedence in my WLAF searches.  The first time I found him, there was no response so I assumed he had moved on, and it was back to the drawing board. After a few years I picked up a new Meiselman and shot him out a letter at his home address. Robb kindly responded in under a month, thanking me for bringing back those wonderful memories, and enclosed a business card. Robb was inducted into the University of South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2005.

Gettis, David

epix10 gettisCard: Epix 2010
Acquired: 2014 Box Breaker, Target Autographed Memorabilia

David Gettis is an experienced return man with great size (6’3″) and good speed(4.39). Projected to go as late as the 7th round, he finished his career at Baylor with 116 receptions for 1555 yards and 4 touchdowns to go along with 41 kick returns for 932 yards and a TD.

Gettis was picked by the Carolina Panthers in the 5th round of the 2010 NFL draft. The Panthers were looking to give the offense a complete overhaul and dipped unabashedly into the wide receiver pool  drafting Brandon LaFell (2nd) and Armanti Edwards (3rd) as well. As Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen fought it out to be the starting quarterback, Gettis battled LaFell in the slot. Gettis won out and started 13 games recording 37 catches for 508 yards and 3 TDs. He’d also haul in an 88 yard bomb against the Baltimore Ravens. David would be injured in practice in 2011 and missed the entire season with a torn ACL. While he did return in 2012, the Panthers were now stacked at receiver and reached an injury settlement with Gettis in August of 2013. The Redskins signed David in early January of 2014, but he’d be cut in May. Later he’d be picked up by the Bucs, and cut again. Currently he is a free agent.

Palmer, Jordan

to07 jo palmerCard: Topps Certified 2007
Acquired: Target Autograph Memorabilia Pack, 2013

Jordan Palmer is the younger brother of Heisman Trophy Winner Carson Palmer. While also playing quarterback, Jordan has traveled a much different path than his decorated older brother. Jordan ended up attending the University of Texas – El Paso, playing quarterback for the UTEP Miners from 2003 through 2006 putting together a respectable quarterback resume.

The Washington Redskins drafted Jordan with their 6th round pick in 2007. Despite playing well in the preseason, Palmer was one of the final roster cuts that season. He’d hop over to the Arizona Rattlers of the AFL, but not see any playing time, signing with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2008, backing up his brother Carson, who lobbied hard for him to come to the team. They became the first active duo of brother to play for the same NFL team and Jordan remained with the Bengals through mid 2010.

Jordan went to the Oakland Raiders that year, where he was ironically reunited with his brother Carson who joined the team in 2011.  Jordan played in the UFL for the Sacramento Mountain Lions later that year, and quickly found a home with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2012. In 2013, Palmer played for the Bears, and then both the Bills and Titans through 2014.
