Bouyer, Willie

Willie Bouyer played along such notables as Andre Rison, Bobby McAllister and Lorenzo White, while being a part of the last great Michigan State Spartan football teams. Originally a free agent signee by the Seattle Seahawks after going undrafted in 1989, Bouyer played in one game, making one reception for 9 yards that season, and then spent the whole 1990 season on the practice squad.

In 1991, Head Coach Chan Gailey and the Birmingham Fire made him their first round choice of the positional draft and he’d become established as the team’s #1 receiver and speedster, making 28 receptions for 456 yards and a strong 16.3 yard average. Willie scored 2 touchdowns that season, both against Orlando  where he caught an 87 yard bomb and a 21 yarder to key the team’s 31-6 victory.  Against the Dragons in the playoffs Bouyer made 9 catches for 115 yards in a losing effort.

Willie continued to play for the WLAF in 1992. He’d have an impressive sophomore campaign making 57 receptions for 706 yards, leading the team once again in receptions and yards but would go without a touchdown. Willie made some spectacular plays over the 2 seasons with the Fire and was an important target for quarterbacks Mike Norseth, Brent Pease, and Eric Jones.

Bouyer signed with the Eagles in 1992 after the dismantling of the WLAF, but did not make the team. Later Willie re-emerged with the Sacramento Gold Miners of the CFL USA in 1993 and 1994. He’d make 15 receptions for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns in 1994 and retired from professional football after the season.

I’ve attempted on an occasion or two  to get Bouyer’s autograph on his remaining cards, but the mercurial receiver has yet to respond.

Garrett, Jason

A free agent signee of the New Orleans Saints back in 1989, Jason Garrett would hang on with the team through the 1990 season.

The WLAF San Antonio Riders would draft Garrett to be their starting quarterback but he’d separate his shoulder in the season opener against the Orlando Thunder and within a few weeks Mike Johnson would be firmly entrenched as the starter. (While Garrett would return to start games 7 and 8, Johnson would end the season as the San Antonio Riders encumbent, winning all their games as a starter going 4-2 for the team.)  Jason would not return to the WLAF after the season, and finish his career there with a 71 quarterback rating.

After a brief stint in the CFL for the Ottawa Roughriders, Garrett would be signed by the Dallas Cowboys where he would back up Troy Aikman. Initially a 3rd stringer, I was not high on the move by the team, however he performed well for the Cowboys over the next 8 seasons. During his time on the Cowboys, I’d get his autograph on these two ProSet WLAF cards. He’d be a premium backup policy through the rest of his career, seeing stints with the Giants (2000-03), Buccaneers and Dolphins (2004) before retiring.

Garrett is a student of the game and was immediately in demand as a quarterbacks coach. He quickly transitioned into the role for the Dolphins and served there for two seasons through 2006. Jason would return to Dallas (where clan Garrett is based now), and became offensive coordinator scaling the ranks of the organization. He was named interim head coach in 2010 after Wade Phillips was dismissed midway through the season, and at the conclusion of the season had the tag removed to become Dallas’ 8th head coach.

I sent off for all of clan Garrett (Jason, Judd, and John) last season, but did not hear back from them. As Jason only has 1 card (Ultimate WLAF 1992) that I do not have an his autograph on, I may try this again at a later date. Listed below are his WLAF statistics:

Pitts, Allen

An incredible wide receiver talent, Allen Pitts played collegiately at Cal State Fullerton.  Drafted by the Stamps in 1990, Pitts would dominate the record books for the next 11 seasons for Calgary. Pitts was a fan favorite who was considered an enigma by everyone. While other players put down roots during the off-season in Calgary, Pitts would return to the LA basin. Players considered him the team jokester, with an extremely private side and because of this nature,  he was quickly a target of the media.

His rookie season would start off quite nicely with 1100+ yards receiving and an 18 ypc average. He’d go on through the next 10 seasons logging 8 more 1,000+ yard seasons receiving, including a club record high 2036 yards in 1994 to go along with 126 receptions and 21 touchdowns. Considered extremely competitive, Pitts retired while his career was still in its prime, -and after another 1000 yard season in 2000. At the time of his retirement, he was a 6 time All-Star, the CFL’s All-time leader in yards receiving, touchdowns, and receptions, (since surpassed), most 100 yard games (64), and was the first player in league history to record two consecutive seasons of 100+ receptions.

Inducted into the Stampeders Wall of Fame in 2005, his jersey retired by the team, the CFL Hall of Fame in 2006, and named #10 on the greatest players in CFL history, Pitts’ current whereabouts are sketchy, but it is believed that he still lives in the Los Angeles area and older data suggests that he was working in a construction business. A great TTM prospect acquisition at that time in 1992.
