Davis, Mike (WR)

Mike Davis played at UT where he piled up the numbers despite issues at quarterback for the Longhorns in the twilight years of the Brown era.  He finished with 200 catches, 2,753 yards and 18 TDs to rank fourth, fifth and fourth on the career charts for the Longhorns. He is one of 5 receivers (Jordan Shipley, Roy Williams, Jaxon Shipley, and Quan Cosby) in school history to record 200 or more catches and his 10 100-yard receiving games rank second in school history. Mike Davis did well enough to earn an invitation to the Senior Bowl.

Projected to go in the 7th round of the NFL Draft, I had hoped that the Texans would select him in the 2014 draft, however he would not be selected. Davis signed a free agent contract with the Oakland Raiders after the draft but he’d be released in August.  Mike signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL in 2015, and later had a tryout with the Panthers and Chiefs.  In 2016 he was selected by ‘Team Texas’ of the fledgling MLFB.

I was able to get his autograph on these three cards, thanks in part again to my friend Shawn.  He gave me the Topps and one of the Sage cards to get signed. The bronze colored sharpie is quickly becoming my favorite as it rescues a fairly pedestrian looking autograph. Mike was nice to all the fans who attended the event in the cramped corner of the convenience store.  After a rough start with BAM a few years ago, I’ve been impressed with the handling of events by the promoter and his staff.

Weary, Fred (OG)

wearyOddly  Fred Weary does not have any football cards, even though he was drafted in the 3rd round by the Texans in the 2002 draft.  He’d start 12 of 16 games that rough rookie season, blocking up front alongside Chester Pitts for David Carr– who went down an NFL record 76 times.  He’d play in 20 games over the next 2 following seasons before a new regime came in.  Playing in a new offensive system for Gary Kubiak in 2006, Fred started 12 games. In 2007, Fred was putting together a solid campaign when he broke his leg in a contest against the Titans. The Texans opted to place him on IR for the 2008 campaign to continue rehabilitation, but he was released by the Texans in October of that year.  Fred signed with the Browns for 2009, but was released with an undisclosed injury settlement. In 2013 or 2014 Fred joined the Houston Texans Ambassador program, and makes appearances for the team at functions for meet and greet and autographs.

mem weary2I was not prepared for Fred, so I had him sign the team ‘post card’ included in the Upper Deck 2002 Inaugural Texans set.  It was a wet and soggy affair, but still worth it to nab him and a few other players. Since it was pouring rain they completely moved the event inside to the parking lot. It worked out well despite the humidity, and the lines were not too long.

When I saw him later at the 2015 Draft Party, I had him sign the Texans blank that they provided. A cheap alternative to actually having a card or photo, I appreciate it nonetheless.

Floyd, Victor

Victor Floyd was the running mate to Sammie Smith at FSU. As a Sophomore, he led the team with 681 yards and 6 TDs. Injuries derailed what could’ve been a spectacular career for Floyd, but he still managed 5.8 yards per carry, 1,548 yards, and 12 TDs in his career.

A member of the 1989 draft, Floyd was selected in the 11th round by the Chargers. He briefly saw playing time that year, rushing for 15 yards on 8 carries.

Victor was drafted in the 3rd round of the runningback portion of the WLAF draft in 1991.  He did it all for the Surge leading  the team in rushing with 406 yards and 2 TDs, and averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Victor also caught 13 passes out of the backfield, including a 60 yarder for a TD against Montreal.  His best rushing game came against the Knights– a 102 yard 13 carry effort.  Floyd also led the team in kickoff return average with 21 yards on 9 returns.

In 1992 the Surge was massively retooling their offense and allowed him to sign elsewhere. Possibly impressed by his performance against them, the Knights signed Floyd to the team’s runningback stable of Eric Wilkerson and Chris McLemore.  He finished the season with 8 carries for 12 yards, and 6 catches for 166 yards and a 65 yard TD. He then played for the Orlando Predators in the Arena Football League, before retiring.

Victor has been coaching since then at the high school level. He’s held a variety of positions from basketball, track, and head football coach. He is currently an Algebra instructor and head football coach at Agape Christian Academy. Under his watch the school advanced to the playoffs for the first time in history.
