Cards: UT UD 2011, UT UD 2011 All Time Alumni
Acquired: 2/26/13,  IP  Rudy’s Ribfest 2013

Rudy’s in Round Rock was packed for Ribfest ’13, so I was left searching exactly for what Kwame looked like. Thanks to the power the internet, I Googled his face and realized he was sitting at the table next to me while I was standing in line. I quickly pulled out the cards and asked for his autograph and he said, “Absolutely. Do you have the Upper Deck Longhorn cards?” I handed them to him and he penned them right there on the spot.

Kwame Cavil was a Big 12 star for the University of Texas during the heyday of Ricky Williams and Major Applewhite. At 6’3″, 205, Cavil kept teams honest at wide out, setting UT and Big 12 single season records (at the time) with 100 receptions and 1,188 yards, both numbers he posted in 1999. In 30 games Kwame recorded 174 receptions and 2279 yards for the Longhorns. He and Applewhite formed one of the most productive passing/receiving duos in school history. Cavil could’ve probably set more school records but declared after the 1999 season for the draft. After a poor showing at his pro day and the combine, Cavil went undrafted. He signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2000 recording 4 catches for 66 yards.

In 2002, Kwame signed with the CFL Montreal Alouettes playing there through 2005, being named a CFL East All-Star in 2004, and a Grey Cup Champion in 2005. Signing with the Edmonton Eskimos in 2005, he was traded to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for the 2006 season. The Tiger-cats In turn traded him to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2006. He enjoyed moderate success over his career in the CFL and was embraced by fans for his end zone celebrations. Currently Cavil lives in Central Texas with his family and is an assistant football coach at the High School level.

Robinson, Keenan

Card: Leaf Rookies 2012, Leaf Young Stars 2012
Acquired: 2012, Box Breaker.  2/16/2013, Longhorn Neighborhood Foundation Bowling Tournament

Keenan Robinson was a solid outside linebacker for the Texas Longhorns as a 3 year starter. In the 2011 campaign he notched 106 tackles, 10 TFL, 1 sack, and 2 FF. Keenan also earned Holiday Bowl MVP Honors after the season. Keenan in college wore (from what I can tell) undersized pads. Either that or the technology has come so far that they look small. Initially the name did not click when I got the Leaf Draft box breaker and I thought he was a wide receiver. His combine numbers were purely average, but this was good enough to rank him 4th among inside linebacker talent. A solid athlete, with a nose for the ball and decent pass coverage skills, Keenan was drafted in the 4th round of the 2012 draft by the Washington Redskins.  Jim Haslett and his defensive staff immediately shifted him to inside linebacker in the hope that he can become one of the heirs to aging superstar London Fletcher, but in the meantime expected Robinson to get a lot of repetition on leafys12 robinsonspecial teams and sparse time full-time in the lineup. He was able to scoop up 12 tackles, but blew out his pectoral muscle in Week 12 and missed the remainder of the season.

I got into the Longhorn Bowling event sheerly through my connections, and while I was there I happened to bump into James Kirkendoll who had shaved his dreds off. Along with him were Aaron Williams and Keenan Robinson. – I embarrassingly did not recognize them. They sat down and had lunch with me and were talking a whole gambit of topics from football to the women of Montreal. Later once the bowling teams were announced I finally attached the names to the faces that were sitting in front of me a short time earlier. Keenan took it all in stride and signed the Leaf Young Stars 2012 card for me. It turned out to be a great event and I hope that they consider expanding it in the future on a limited basis to the general public.

Acho, Emmanuel “The Man”

hit12 achoCard: Sage Hit 2012
Acquired: In Person 2/16/2013, Longhorn Neighborhood Foundation Bowling Tournament

Emmanuel Acho was another nice find for me at the LNF Bowling tournament. When I asked him to sign my card, his response was- “Gladly!” SaGe made some strides back to reality with their 2012 set, as many fans were put off by the 2011 cards.  Certainly I was excited to get this one autographed by the former Longhorn.

As a linebacker, Emmanuel is the younger brother of Sam Acho. He clocks in at 6’2″, 238 and had an impressive career playing for the Longhorns racking up 278 tackles, 8 sacks, 41 TFL, and 2 picks. He was considered a find in the 6th round of the 2012 draft for the Browns, but he was injured in training camp and spent the complete season on injured reserve. It is expected that with new coaching blood taking over the franchise in 2013 that Acho will step up and contribute in the Browns linebacking corps.
