Bradley, Bill ‘Super Bill’ (2)

Bill Bradley signed my custom card of him, and also sent back the extra with more inscriptions upon it. A solid return, he wrote me a nice note with a full page of additional inscriptions and thanked me for being a fan and putting this website together with my shrines to the multiple leagues.

I hadn’t seen Bill since he appeared in Austin for the Upper Deck set signing back in 2011. In the meantime, while he was coaching at Lamar (2012-2014) I found this Upper Deck Legends card I really wanted to get him on, but I opted not to try him through the mail yet.

Time passed, and in 2018- after much deliberation, the Alliance of American Football established their last franchise in San Antonio. I quickly speculated that the team was going to nab Mike Riley as their head coach. While at the Season Ticket Holders Team Announcement Party, Mike let me in on a little secret since he knew I was a San Antonio Riders fan- he was courting Bill to come back and work for him on the Commanders defense as a defensive secondary coach!

Bill’s secondary in the AAF was an exciting unit to watch and led the league in turnovers. His coaching legacy now also includes the AAF Defensive Player of the Year Derron Smith, and a bevvy of players who were signed to NFL, Arena, and XFL rosters.

Lindstrom, Eric

Card: Wild Card World League 1992

Eric Lindstrom played for Boston College where he was a starter for 3 years. He was listed as a defensive end, but clocking in at 6’3″, 230, he was probably an outside linebacker/ tweener, who played a fair amount of time with his hand in the dirt. Eric finished with 4 interceptions for 59 yards, and competed in two bowl games during his college career. He joined the WLAF in 1991, and went to play ball for his college coach Jack Bicknell, and the Barcelona Dragons.

In 1991, Eric had 4 sacks, 26 tackles, and a pick for the stingy Dragons defense at outside linebacker. He returned to the WLAF in 1992, and led the team with 7 sacks as the Dragons won the European Division. Afterwards he signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. Lindstrom made 2 tackles, and an interception for 86 yards that he took for a TD during his brief time in the league. After a brief hiatus, (while the World League was reorganizing) Eric returned to play for the league one more time in 1995 adding a final sack to his resume.

After tracking down Eric, he signed his Wild Card in about a week, and wrote me a nice note thanking me for being such a big fan.

Young, Charlie

Card: Ultimate World League 1992

Charlie Young played ball for the Stanford Cardinal where mixed time between runningback and receiver from 1987 to 1990. In 1987 he posted 17 receptions for 246 yards and a TD, while rushing 37 times for 130 yards and another TD. He also returned 17 kicks for 336 yards. He’d be moved to WR for 1988, and have a pretty solid campaign, catching 43 passes for 560 yards and 2 TDs. After his 1989 season was washed due to injury, he saw sparse playing time in 1990 accumulating 233 yards from scrimmage. Charles was not selected in the 1991 NFL Draft, and subsequently did not make the roster of the Raiders.

Charlie was selected by the in the 7th round of the 1992 World League Draft. He’d split time between the London Monarchs and the Montreal Machine that season rushing 50 times for 147 yards and a TD. He’d be a valuable stop valve with the Machine catching 22 passes for 203 yards and a 30 yard TD. (For purposes of the team histories however- he’s classified with the team his card pictures him with.)

After the league reorganized, Charlie returned stateside where he bounced around between squads. He’d see time with the Giants and 49ers in 1992, and the Raiders in 1993. Charlie then returned to the World League in 1995 after it reorganized, playing for the Rhein Fire, rushing for 44 yards and a TD while catching 11 passes for 125 yards. He also spent a small amount of time returning kicks during his world tour, accounting for some 180 yards on 12 returns.

Charlie has put his economics degree/ MBA to good work since his playing days, and after a tour on the board at Stanford, resides in Illinois where he is involved in real estate.

I had been on the hunt for Charlie for quite a while, but with such a common name I couldn’t just look in the phone book. It took an article on Charlie’s work for Stanford to pop up, so I wrote him C/o the university. They responded by giving me his forwarding address. I quickly gave up on this request, but lo and behold after about 3 months, he wrote me back with a nice thank-you card.
