NOTES:

Brian’s been really good to fans over the years appearing around Austin for signings. I got a really late notice of this one, and had to choose between this signing and two to three others- proof positive that maybe, just maybe 5 years after COVID we’re getting back to normal with signings. After getting the blessing from my wife to go, I arrived a little early and then waited downstairs at the HEB. He then passed me by on the escalator so I went into hot pursuit mode and followed him to the event.

He was in a great mood. I gave him one of my Upper Deck UT 2011 HACK cards, and he loved it! I demonstrated that it was a ‘real card’- glossy and not with some flimsy thickness by banging it slightly on his arm. It was a last second idea to get these cards signed in bronze, but it turned out to be a stroke of genius as these autographs came out spectacular!

I had to dig to find the UT HACK card I did. I wasn’t too happy with how it turned out as the marquee was darker than I expected. Nonetheless with the autograph it vaults into my top three customs with an autograph.

We then talked for a few minutes about the card market, since he knows I’m a collector. (I got the impression he was thinking about investing in it either through participating in breaks or co-hosting one.) I am firmly of the belief based on the sets I collect and watch through eBay that the market is tapering off and I shared that with him. Also the fact there are just too many people making it too hard just to collect the sets they want, and how it used to be you’d go to the store, and buy a 20-30 dollar blaster and get 2 autographs. Now you’re lucky to get a parallel… Anyway it was such an illuminating conversation that I decided to take a photo with Rak!

NOTES:

Never in my wildest dreams after seeing Ricky Williams during Spring Break of 2020, would I believe that I wouldn’t see another in person signing until September of 2021, but that is exactly what happened due to COVID. My work (at the time) sent us home- telling us they’d see us in a week or two. Our stay was extended indefinitely, eventually to a point where I never stepped foot in the office again.

Orakpo was hosting an event for a new business he was working on, Restore Wellness. I decided to have some fun and got a treatment trying out cryotherapy. It completely got rid of my joints cracking for a few days.

Bowman 2009 Draft Picks Superlatives, #S2 Upper Deck 2009 Heroes. #184

Adrenalyn 2009, #389 Score 2011, #293

We watched the UT game against TCU, and I gave a pretty accurate score. Brian signed anything and everything. I grabbed a few signed photos on my way out the door, and gave them to a few friends. I am quickly running out of cards of his. A lot of these represented set needs and likes, as the Donruss Rookies & Stars 09, and the Adrenalyn always stuck out in my mind.

bo09 qcosby LPbow09 qcosbyWell the University Coop Season Opener turned out to be a total bust in 2015. Both do09th qcosby GKdo09gg qcosbyTony DeGrate and Doug Dawson were no shows, but I was still able to parlay a few Quan Cosby cards into autographs as he was hanging out in the building.  He’d sign his Donruss Gridiron and Upper Deck cards for me at the time.

Later I reloaded and got the rest of his cards at the Tiff’s Treats Grand Opening. With some rare cards here in the GridIron Kings, Donruss Classics, and Playoff Contenders, Quan took the time to study each card intently before signing each one. Since I did not have the time to prep the Contenders card, Quan made sure the ink dried on the card.

Let’s not lie. There are some real design gems in this group. Among them, I spent the extra coinage to get a hold of this Donruss Threads Gridiron Kings patch card. The college letter patch also goes without saying. The Bowman just smacks me in the face with simplicity and finishes it off with a great photo.

About the only one that doesn’t get me out of the group is the Donruss Gridiron Gear card.  I’m not sure what is going on with the abstract deconstruction in the background.  Although Quan stands out from the background composition, he’s anchored by the strange looking artifact of photo background that looks like a #1. It just detracts more than it adds and is just way too over designed.
