I had been circling to come back to Bill after I got his autograph on a few cards via a trade a few years ago. The primary reason was to get him on his Upper Deck Legends card from a beautiful action shot of when he played for the Eagles.

The Topps 1978 played a different role however. I selected this card primarily because Bill and my father (who passed away in 2019) looked so much alike, even down to the bushy red brown 70s beard.

I miss you dad.

CAREER SNAPSHOT:

  • Stepfret Williams played for Louisiana-Monroe in 1994 and 1995.
  • He racked up some monster numbers posting two back to back 1,000 yard seasons.
  • In just two years he had 123 catches for 2162 yards (17.6 YPR) and 22 TDs.
  • The Dallas Cowboys selected Stepfret in the 3rd round of the 1996 NFL Draft.
  • Came into his own as a slot man, posting 30 receptions for 308 yards with 21 of those going for first downs and 1 for a TD.
  • Released by Cowboys in 1998, he signed with the Cincinnati Bengals.
  • Signed as a free agent with the San Diego Chargers in 2000, but did not make the squad.
  • Williams played in the XFL in 2001 posting 828 yards on 51 receptions.

NOTES:

Stepfret was a curiosity to me. I felt he could’ve really excelled at the pro level, but just needed more seasoning. I was surprised that after his Birmingham Bolt experience he didn’t find a home with an NFL team. Great cards and autographs, I loved all three of these. Holograms were such a niche thing back then but this one looked great on a card.

Lo those many years ago I got David TTM via the Bengals and also at Cowboys training camp when he was with the Raiders. I had gotten it into my mind somehow that I had written him at some point in between those dates, but after reconciling my records, realized I had not and had only received an autograph via a bulk purchase that I made back in 2012 or 2013 when my friend was exiting the hobby for a while.

A couple of set needs arose here in the Skybox ‘Colors’ set- one that I had always wanted to collect, but it was too expensive at the time and I was already on my way out of collecting. Other than that the Classic 92 card always looked good with him in his H-Town reds and this Gameday card is a really nice action card set need.
