Quietly Coryell Judie appeared on the scene at Texas A&M after playing JUCO at Fort Scott CC. A dangerous returner and cornerback, Judie finished his JUCO time with 7 picks, and 82 tackles. As FS’ primary return man he averaged 26.8 yards per kick return, and 15.1 on punt returns, earning JUCO All American Honors. He’d get a medical redshirt from A&M in 2009, and then show his colors in 2010 by intercepting 4 passes and recording 57 tackles. Judie also was 5th nationally in kick returns with 605 yards on 20 attempts and two touchdowns. This was good enough to help him notch second-team All-Big 12 honors at CB, honorable mention at KR, and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. He’d have off-season shoulder surgery. A hamstring injury in 2011 hampered his senior season, limiting him to just 22 tackles. Still he impressed scouts enough at his pro day, with a 4.38 40 and his performance in many other drills. The Broncos signed him as a free agent after the 2012 draft, but he’d be cut in July with the designation of a non-football injury. He’d briefly be on the roster of the Edmonton Eskimos in  2013, before joining the AFL Portland Thunder in 2014.

I had a feeling that I might get something from my old address, I just didn’t expect it to be from so long ago. I had failed previously to get Shelton via the Titans for whom he was a long time scout back in 2010, but armed with his home address I just wasn’t ready to give up yet. With this TTM from 2012 it pushes my successes from that year to nearly 70%.

Richard  was a standout defensive back and punt returner for Liberty. His college totals include 12 picks, 136 tackles, 21 punt returns for 176 yards and a TD.  He was originally taken by the Denver Broncos in the 1989 draft. Unable to make the team Shelton bounced around the league with the Seahawks and Steelers before being drafted by the Montreal Machine of the WLAF in 1991.

ultwlaf92 sheltonRichard had a strong season for the team and became one of the league’s better known success stories along with Chris Mohr and Anthony Parker. He finished 1991 with 28 tackles, 3 interceptions for 65 yards and a TD. He also demonstrated his knack for special teams both on kick returns and punt returns, as Richard became the first player in the league to score a touchdown on a kick return and punt return in the same game. Richard also earned WLAF Player of the Week honors against Birmingham when he picked off a pass and returned it 63 yards for a score and also returned a fumble 25 yards in the Machine’s 23-10 win. After the season Richard earned All World League Second Team Honors, and resigned with Pittsburgh.

In the season finale in 1992 against the Browns, Richard made 3 interceptions for 57 yards and a TD, earning player of the week honors.  The next season in 3 starts he’d have 2 fumble recoveries coming off the bench. After his career ended in 1993, Shelton moved right into coaching and scouting and is currently a scout for the Tennessee Titans organization.

Treadwell, David

David Treadwell was an excellent kicker for the Clemson Tigers.  Amazingly he started as a walk-on with an academic scholarship, who had only played soccer during High School.  He began his college career in 1984, as a backup to All-American kicker Donald Igwebuike, then took over full-time from 1985 to 1987.  Dave made 47-of-66 field-goal attempts over his playing career, including 18 of 22 in ’87 when he was an All-American.

The second time would end up being a charm for David, who had been in the Broncos 1988 training camp. Released before the season, he signed with Phoenix, which traded him back to Denver for a draft choice before the 1989 training camp. That season David was named to the All-Rookie team and the Pro Bowl that season, finishing with 120 points.  His 27 field goals that year, tied a 27 year old team record. He played with the Denver Broncos through the 1992 season posting well above 70% field goal completion while he played for the franchise. After the season he’d following head coach Dan Reeves with other loyalists to the New York Giants, and continue his solid kicking duties through the 1994 season. (Denver in the meantime found Jason Elam.) While he was dead on from short and medium range, Treadwell was not utilized from long range, nor on kickoffs. Rather the Giants carried an extra kicker (Brad Daluiso) for those capacities. This probably partially contributed to Dave being cut after the season by the Giants as a Salary Cap casualty. True to form, a closer look at his career stats reveals only 2 FGs attempted over 50 yards.

Treadwell was immortalized on the Broncos roster of Tecmo Super Bowl. He is retired in the Denver area, and is a real estate lawyer, sports agent, and sports radio personality.
