Jones, AJ ‘Jam’

University of Texas Upper Deck 2011, #40

CARD: University of Texas Upper Deck 2011
ACQUIRED: Ebay, 2020

CAREER SNAPSHOT:

  • Followed in Earl Campbell‘s footsteps playing RB at the University of Texas.
  • Best year came in 1979, rushing for 918 yards on 188 carries, scoring 10 TDs.
  • Ran for a career high 165 yards against Arkansas in 1980.
  • Finished career at UT logging 645 career carries for 2874 yards and 27 TDs.
  • Selected in 8th round of 1982 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams.
  • Dressed for 29 games for the Rams from 1982-1985.
  • Finally saw some playing time with the Lions in 1985 as a kick returner.

NOTES:

Played alongside a duo of other Jones players. The trio was nicknamed ‘The Ham, Lam and Jam Jones Show’. I had wanted to get him for a while but saw a well priced certified on EBay to knock Jam off my list. Strangely this set is the only one to have any cards of AJ in them. I’m sure he was tickled to finally have one. He’s got a great autograph.

CAREER SNAPSHOT:

NOTES:

I had gotten Rich way, way back when he was with the Houston Oilers TTM. He had some great cards, but I only got one at the time. Later I acquired the Topps, Bowman, and Score autographs as part of what I call the ‘Akron Aquisition’- a stack of autographs I got from Bryan when he briefly left the hobby. A consistent signer, I put out these last 4 to Rich, with the majority of them being set needs. Honestly one of the best autographs out there- if not for punters alone. Love the loops. Solid.

CAREER SNAPSHOT:

  • Played FB for Michigan, rushing for 1346 yards on 311 carries, scoring 8 TDs, while catching 30 passes.
  • At 6’2″, 250, 4.5 40- was considered one of the strongest, biggest, and fastest fullbacks to enter the NFL Draft in 1991.
  • Selected at #27 overall by the New York Giants, who were looking to go younger in a rapidly aging backfield, and wanting to add a compliment to RB Rodney Hampton.
  • Saw extremely limited action rookie season, contributing 6 tackles and a blocked punt on special teams.
  • Had best season as a pro rushing for over 500 yards in 1992, while blocking for Hampton who had over 1,000.
  • Yards per carry was 3rd among runners (4.8) with 500 yards or more that season.
  • Injuries and a focus more on an H-back offense, resulted in decreased playing time in 1993.
  • Missed most of camp in 1994, and pulled a hamstring shortly thereafter, prompting release.
  • Signed by Raiders as an injury replacement for Napoleon McCallum playing in 3 games.
  • Retired in 1995 and has continued to stay active in coaching, martial arts, and acting.

NOTES:

With a few cards that I wanted to get signed, I found Jarrod through Facebook who signs for a nominal fee.
