I had seen a fair amount of TTM returns coming in for Irving Fryar for a nominal donation. Armed with a few extra cards I always wanted to get autographed, I decided to give him another shot.
To be honest, things have been rough for Fryar since his playing days, as he has been in and out of trouble with the law for mortgage fraud. He was released in 2016 after serving 8 months in prison.
GameDay and Action Packed were among the most gimmicky of the early 90s cards you could get, but early on they rewarded you with outstanding action shots of your favorite players. I couldn’t decide between these 3 cards, so I went ahead and sent all three out and took a shot. I really liked the GameDay card. It’s impactful and the framing is deliberate and precise. You can feel that Fryar is right at the moment of making that catch. The Action Packed 1991 is a very nice profile picture taken and framed at just the right size. While the 1990 Action Packed card does nothing to stand out from his other cards, it is a rarity to see- little less to have autographed.
Mike Hull was a nice find by the Miami Dolphins. A diamond in the rough out of Penn State, Hull carries on the Nittany Lion tradition of Linebacker U. Hull played for the school during its collapse and rebirth from the Sandusky scandal from 2013 to 2014. He displayed versatility by switching from outside linebacker to inside linebacker under Bill O’Brien. He posted 216 total tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 5 passes defensed, and 1 interception for 12 yards. His 2014 campaign earned Mike Big 10 LB of the Year.
Hull was not selected in the 2015 NFL Draft. Scouts did not like his size or athleticism. Undeterred Mike signed with the Miami Dolphins and spent the season on and off the practice squad. He returned to the Dolphins in 2016 and made the squad. An important role player in Miami’s defense, Mike finished with 33 combined tackles and an interception that season. He returned in 2017 and started 3 games, posting 35 combined tackles and a fumble recovery.
Cordrea Tankersely- Wow. How can you forget a name like that. It just says, football player. Anyway, Cordrea was selected in the 3rd round of the 2017 draft by the Miami Dolphins.
A throwback to the pure corner, Tankersely has an impressive set of wheels (4.4 combine 40 to lead all DBs), and is the man in one-on-one press coverage. The knock on him is that he doesn’t like to get his hands dirty in run support. (That’s okay. The same thing was said about Deion Sanders.) He really came alive in his final two years at Clemson. The pass covering machine blanketed receivers to the tune of 5 interceptions and 9 PBU to pace the Tigers in 2015, and 4 interceptions and 11 PBU in 2016. With a season ending injury to Tony Lippett in 2017, it appears Tankersely could be in for a bigger role in the Dolphins defense, after he impressed coaches with a solid preseason. He finished the season with 34 tackles and 7 pass breakups in 11 starts.
Celebrating the game, the players, the cards, and the autographs for over 25 years.
