Carrier, Mark (WR)

The Buccaneers drafted Mark Carrier out of Nicholls State at the top of the 3rd round, to pair him up with overall #1 pick Vinny Testaverde in 1987. A solid pickup by Tampa, Carrier would start hitting his stride by 1988, making 57 receptions for 970 yards and 5 touchdowns. He’d follow up his sophomore campaign with career highs across the board, with 86 receptions for 1422 yards and 9 touchdowns. Mark would be named to the ProBowl and All Pro after the 1989 season. He’d continue to play for the Buccaneers through 1992, and then join Vinny Testaverde in Cleveland via free agency in 1993.  As of 2011, he remains the franchise’s all-time leader in career receiving yardage with 5,018.

At the conclusion of the 1994 season, Carrier would be drafted by the Carolina Panthers in their expansion draft with the 32nd pick.  He’d begin anew in Carolina, making 66 receptions for 1002 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Panthers in the 1995 season paired up with Steve Beuerlein. Mark would follow this up with a 58 reception season for 808 yards, however by 1997 injuries would begin to limit his playing time, and after starting only 1 game over the 1998 season, Mark would retire.

Mark is a voracious TTM signer and is currently enjoys coaching Pee Wee football in the Tampa area. He also appeared in Tecmo Super Bowl for the Buccanneers, and in Tecmo Super Bowl III Final Edition for the Carolina Panthers. Mark (wide receiver, 1987 draft) is not to be confused with the defensive back by the same name drafted by the Chicago Bears drafted in 1990.

Jeffcoat, Jim

Jim Jeffcoat played 15 seasons in the NFL after being drafted in the first round by the Dallas Cowboys out of Arizona State in 1983. He’d immediately replace Harvey Martin in the lineup and Jeffcoat would pick up where Martin left off, -harassing opposing ball carriers and quarterbacks of the NFC East opposite “Too Tall” Jones. Over 12 seasons with the Cowboys, Jeffcoat became recognized as one of the best finess rushers in the league recording 5 seasons of 10 or more sacks and 5 seasons of 70+ tackles. As time wore on, and with the eventual arrival of Charles Haley, Jim would share time at left defensive end with Tony Tolbert. He’d oddly sign with the Buffalo Bills in 1995, playing 3 more seasons with them before his eventual retirement, after 15 seasons.

Jim’s 102.5 sacks rank him in the career top 25 for the NFL, and while he was nominated in 2008, Jeffcoat has not made the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Considered one of the finest defensive linemen to come out of Arizona State, he was inducted into their hall of fame in 1994. Since retirement Jeffcoat has worked for the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Cougars as a defensive line coach and at the time of this post he was working for the San Jose State Spartans in that same capacity.

Mitchell, Brian

Brian Mitchell was a quarterback originally at Southwest Louisiana. An amazing athlete, he owned virtually all the quarterback records when he left the college and was the first NCAA player to throw for over 5,000 yards and rush for over 3,000 in their career. After graduating from college, he was drafted in the 5th round of the 1990 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. The Redskins were deep at quarterback so the team decided they’d throw him back there as a return specialist, runningback, and as emergency quarterback. Brian would rack up the return yardage playing for the Redskins through 1999. An electric returner, Mitchell led the league in punt return yards with 600 in 1991,  and was a ProBowl selection in 1995 for the team. In 10 seasons with the Redskins Brian left holding virtually all the Redskins special teams records, racking up over 16,000 yards from scrimmage and 7 punt returns for touchdowns.  After leaving the team, he’d play for the Eagles from 2000-2002 and continued his assault on the record books, setting a league record at the time with 206 kick return yards in a single game.  Brian would play one final season for the New York Giants in 2003, before retiring as a member of the Redskins.

When I initially started this project, Brian was one of the players that I really wanted to honor. Incredibly upon retirement, Mitchell was ranked 2nd all time in yards from scrimmage, had 4 seasons of over 2000 yards, and holds the NFL records for kick returns (607), combined return yards (19013), punt return yards (4999), career kickoff return yards (14014), career fair catches (231), fair catches in a season (33), and punt returns (463). Still most people are unaware of the legacy Mitchell left upon the game and he probably won’t see the Hall of Fame, because of the lack of respect for special teamers. In the meantime, he was inducted into the Redskins Hall of Honor in 2009, works on his foundation (Brian Mitchell Foundation), and has been involved in broadcasting. I was pleased to get Brian’s autograph in 10 days flat from his home in Louisiana.

Great cards of Brian here. ProSet really did their homework and had a card of him before the end of his rookie season in their 1990 update set which was far and ahead of anything anybody produced by at least a year.  Oddly he’d appear in both of Pro Set’s 1990 and 1991 update as the last card in each set. (Sure there were additional inserts after him, but he was the last actual player card.) Mitchell was pretty decent in the first Tecmo Super Bowl, but by Final Edition, he was a dangerous threat in the game. Much like Mel Gray, Brian was a threat to return the kickoff every time he touched the ball and the secret to utilizing him correctly was basically to put him in the starting lineup.
