Wilson, Robert ‘Bull’

Gameday 1992, #470

CARDS: Gameday 1992, ProSet 1991, Wild Card 1991, Action Packed Rookies 1991, Score Supplemental 1991
ACQUIRED: In Person, 2022

CAREER SNAPSHOT:

  • Robert ‘Bull’ Wilson played RB/FB for Texas A&M from 1988-90.
  • Ran 343 times for 724 yards (5 TDs) and had 32 catches for 277 yards and 3 TDs.
  • The premier FB of the 1991 NFL Draft, Robert was selected in the 3rd round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
  • An outstanding blocker, Robert started 15 contests his rookie year, scored 2 TDs on pass receptions, and led the team with a 4.3 yard per carry average (42 carries).
  • With the franchise going through some turmoil between coaches, (Richard Williamson to Sam Wyche), Robert didn’t see any playing time again until 1994, splitting time with the Cowboys and Dolphins.
  • He’d spend the 1995 and ’96 campaigns with the Dolphins playing special teams and as a blocking fullback.
  • Retired and lives in the H-Town area, and recently wrote a book ‘Big Hits & Politics’ – about his time in the NFL.

NOTES:

Thanks to Richmond Webb, I was able to track down Bull. I had some very insightful conversation and comments back and forth with Richmond, when all of a sudden Robert started following me. Staying true to the rule I have of not trying to scare players by immediately engaging them on Twitter, I got really excited when I saw that Robert was releasing his book ‘Big Hits & Politics’. When I asked about a book signing, he and Bam Bam told me to stay tuned.

A non-signer TTM, I considered this one a major coup and a jump start to my 2022. Robert and I talked and he graciously signed the cards I brought. I even gave him a few and put them in a nice binder, since the ones he had were quite beat up.

It was a nice event. Not only was Richmond and Robert there, Kevin Smith also popped in- and I just happened to have cards of him too. Now I gotta say I stuck out like a sore thumb, but everyone was really impressed I made the journey to come down to celebrate his book and his playing career. It was a nice event, and although my phone almost died I was able to navigate my way back out of town.

NOTES:

Well as you can see here, I tried Chris quite a few times. The first time I tried him back in 2012, I was unaware he’d just been sentenced for tax evasion to prison. I tried again when he resurfaced as an athletic director at Chicago State but again got burnt. Finally I closed in during 2021- where he sent a buckslip requesting a fee. I jumped at the shot to finally get Chris after 3 previously unsuccessful attempts and added him on pretty much all my set needs to close the book on this one. He got back all the cards to me at a quick clip, sent me a personal certification of his autograph, and typed form letter thanking me for being a fan.

Corso, Lee

CARD: Pro Set 1991 World League Helmet Insert
ACQUIRED: TTM 2021, C/o Home
SENT: 11/12 RECEIVED: 11/22 (10 days)
FAILURE: TTM 2021, C/o ESPN

CAREER SNAPSHOT:

  • Lee Corso was a great athlete and after high school was immediately identified by the Brookyn Dodgers as a baseball prospect to play short stop.
  • Opted to go to college instead at Florida State, where he played both defensive back and quarterback in college from 1953-1957.
  • Possessing great speed and anticipation, Corso set the school’s career interception record at the time with 14.
  • Although he had a successful college career, he was not selected in the NFL draft.
  • Went into coaching at the college ranks almost immediately, spending time at Maryland (1959-65) and Navy (1966-68) as a positional coach.
  • From there in 1969 Corso served as head coach of Louisville through 1972.
  • He’s perhaps most iconically known as head coach of Indiana, a role he served in from 1973-82.
  • Led the Hoosiers to two winning seasons, including an upset victory over the Brigham Young Cougars in the Holiday Bowl.
  • Finished 41-68-2 at Indiana.
  • Spent one year at Northern Illinois University going 4-6-1.
  • College coaching record is 73-85-6.
  • Head coach of the USFL Orlando Renegades in 1985, where he went 5-13.
  • Lee then joined the WLAF where he served as general manager of the Orlando Thunder for the 1991 season.
  • He was very excited to be a part of the venture, but due to ongoing commitments to ESPN, probably couldn’t return to the squad for their 1992 campaign.
  • Has been an analyst since 1987 for ESPN.

NOTES:

Lee Corso to me, is like the Dick Vitale of college football. He’s beloved by all and everybody loves his quips and antics. I tried him first via ESPN, but after that latest (and multiple other) failure(s), I think the door on TTM through the network is now closed. He has very few cards. I think he had a Press Pass Legends or something like that. -I think I flushed that on the first attempt that failed.
