Schult, Karter ‘Karter Sauce’

Karter Schult was the darling of the Salt Lake City Stallions defense in the Alliance of American Football. The tweener defensive end/ linebacker paced the stubborn Stallion defense with 7 sacks, 25 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and a forced fumble. He graces the cover of this Topps AAF Now card- the only one oddly enough the Stallions and Karter ever appeared in. For his 2 sack, 4 QB hit effort, Karter was named AAF Defensive Player of the Week. It should also be noted that this takedown of Zach Mettenberger ended his season.

 Schult is Northern Iowa’s all-time leader in tackles for loss and second in sacks as just a two year starter.  His final season there in 2016 was a tour de force, as he earned the Buck Buchanan Award as the best defensive FCS college football player. With a non-stop motor, Karter had 74 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 17 sacks, 1 pass deflection, 2 forced fumbles and a pick that year. 

He wasn’t selected in 2017, but spent time in camp with the Cleveland Browns where he had a very good preseason, with 11 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 4 games. He’d be inexplicably cut, and join the Spring League, recording 3 sacks in two contests, and then after his barn burner 2019 season with the Stallions, was in camp with the Vikings.

I was surprised that Karter was not selected by any XFL squads during the 2020 draft. I ever talked to some personnel on the Roughnecks, who told me that they wanted to select him, but were prevented to do so by the league’s main offices which really made me shake my head.

I contacted Karter through email, and he kindly offered to sign his card for me. It took a bit longer than expected because of COVID, but he did get it done. He liked the custom I did as well, and I was flattered he wanted one so after a few months, I got this out to him, but I’m still waiting for one to come back.

I’d say- outside of his adorable wife- I am one of his most ardent supporters, and I hope that he will get another shot and keep plugging away at his pro dreams.

Pierson-El, De’Mornay

An electric player while at Nebraska, De’Mornay Pierson-El, played for the Cornhuskers from 2014-2017. Over that period the team tried hard to get the ball into his hands any way possible, whether it was rushing, receiving or punt returning. In 2014 he returned 3 punts for touchdowns, on 34 returns (596 yards), and in 2017 he had a career high 623 yards receiving on 45 catches (5 TDs).

After the 2018 NFL Draft, Pierson-El was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Washington Redskins. He then joined the Montreal Allouetttes briefly the next month, before finally landing on the squad of the AAF Salt Lake City Stallions. De’Mornay had a solid year for the Stallions leading the way for the wide receivers with 36 catches for 414 yards, a 2 point conversion, and a TD. (That TD marked the first score of the season at home for the Stallions.) His best game came against the San Diego Fleet, where Pierson-el posted 9 catches for 130 yards.

De’Mornay signed with the Raiders after the league fell apart. Following waiver wire reports like a hawk, I sent this to him immediately after he signed with the Raiders. He has been on and off the squad, which discouraged me from ever seeing this again, In fact Pierson-El was drafted by the St. Louis Battlehawks of the XFL 2020, but before he joined the team, he resigned with the Raiders again. It was at that point I guess he decided to pen this card and I received this one back only after a scant 240 days.

Woodrum, Josh

Josh Woodrum was quarterback for the Liberty Flames from 2012-2015. He finished his college career going 833/1304 for 10,266 yards with 61 TDs to 30 interceptions. He was one of only two mid-major QBs to be invited to the NFL combine- with the other being Carson Wentz. Although Woodrum did turn some heads, he was not selected in the 2016 NFL Draft.

He’d be a free agent signee of the New York Giants, and then see time on the rosters of the Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns. Obviously on the radar of a lot of teams but unable to latch onto a roster- Josh signed with the Salt Lake City Stallions of the AAF in 2018.

The AAF then decided that a few teams were stockpiling talent at QB- so in order to fairly distribute the talent they came up with the Protect or Pick QB Draft. The Stallions liked what they had, so they selected Josh with their first pick in the QB Draft (8th overall). Involved in a QB battle with BJ Daniels, Woodrum became the defacto starter after Daniels suffered a season ending injury during the preseason.

Josh started 7 games for the Stallions, and finished with 1,449 yards on 146/227 passing, 6 TDs to 8 interceptions. He finished second in the league, completing 64.3% of his passes, and overall as the 4th highest rated QB with a 76.4 QB Rating.

He joined the Redskins after the AAF folded but did not make the squad. Currently he is a free agent.

Well it took a while for me to find Josh, but after some persistence, I was able to track him down. I sent to him a mere days before the league folded, so I reloaded and tried him with the Redskins, where I failed again. Luckily Mark (Mark’s Signing Bonus) and I worked together to corner the AAF market and he had already gotten him at his home address- so technically the 3rd try was the charm here.
