pset89 ejonesEd Too Tall Jones was my favorite Cowboy player on defense as a kid, so after getting him all those years ago in person, I thought that I might nab him on these other cards I had. I got the Topps 84 through a friend who was liquidating his collection in 2012. Then later in 2014,  I had intended to attend an event with him at it in Dallas, but two days before leaving I got very sick, so I had to call it off.  Right afterwards I sent off for him TTM, but it must have been a sacrifice to the mail gods, as the highly reliable Jones did not respond.  I gave him sco89 ejonesanother shot in 2016 and I was pretty happy with the response, with him signing the ProSet, Score, and Upper Deck entries.

Ed has gotten around over the past few years. The surprisingly durable Jones has made appearances in a few movies- most recently The Wedding Ringer wearing his iconic #72.

He also was elected to the Black College Football Hall of Fame in to84 ed jones2015 after leaving Tennessee State second on the school’s all time list with 106 sacks. He was also recognized as the player of honor at the 17th Annual John Merritt Classic game against Alabama State that year as well. He is an avid golfer and makes appearances at many celebrity tournaments outside the Dallas area.

Despite Jones’ strong pro football resume, he played during an era when sacks and tackles were not tracked/ did not count, and with the backlog of defensive players AND over abundance of Cowboys nominated every year, he has not been enshrined in the HoF. Recently a fan petition through change.org did receive some traction attempting to get him inducted at least into the Cowboys Ring of Honor- something that seems long overdue for the iconic Too Tall Jones at least not be in.

Schroeder, Jay ‘Schraider’

Jay Schroeder had a solid career at UCLA but decided to pursue baseball instead. After kicking the tires around in the minor leagues, Schroeder declared for the NFL draft in 1984. He’d be selected by the Washington Redskins in the 3rd round and ride the bench behind Joe Theismann.  After a grizzly injury to Theismann ended his career prematurely, Schroeder stepped in and threw for a franchise high 4106 yards in 1986. He’d earn his only Pro Bowl appearance after the season. Jay had a really nice touch on the long bomb. This was ap91 jschroederevidenced by him leading the league in yards gained per pass completion- a feat he’d accomplish 3 separate times over his career.

He’d separate his shoulder in the season opener in 1987, and consequently lose his starting job to veteran Doug Williams who had the hot hand at the time. Schroeder asked for a trade and the Redskins acquiesced, trading him and some conditional draft picks to the Raiders in exchange for Jim Lachey.

sky92 jschroederJay played his next 5 seasons for the Raiders. His best season came in 1990 when he led LA to the AFC Championship game agains the Buffalo Bills. The team posted a 12-4 record and he threw 19 touchdowns to only 9 interceptions. In 1991 the Raiders drafted Todd Marinovich to eventually replace Jay.  By 1993 Jay was allowed to bolt from the Raiders, where he signed with the Cincinnati Bengals, starting 3 games as David Klingler‘s backup. The following year he’d hop over to the Arizona Cardinals and split snaps under center with both Steve Beuerlein and Jim McMahon, posting a 5-3 record.

After the season Jay retired. A solid signer, as of 2016, he’s a coach at the high school level and signed these 4 cards for me lightning fast.

Dennis Super Bowl XX victory in 1985 still holds a special place all these years later. He works with the Chicago community and runs Bearly Active Production- an outreach and services program that he and his former Bear teammates are involved in.  Dennis is a civic leader and role model, both at the city and state level.  Previously Dennis served as the offensive coordinator at Illinois Bendictine University where he was a man of many hats from recruiting to marketing. He also worked for the Chicago Bandits (women’s professional softball team) in their front office in corporate sales. McKinnon signed these two gems in about two weeks time.
