Okay! I knew that John L Williams was a slow signer so I just put these out there and wasn’t completely surprised to see them back in a year. A few more of my friends had gotten theirs recently- even waiting so long as 3-4 years to get theirs, so mine seemed like only a smallish accomplishment.
So this is a great case study in design watching the evolution of the Action Packed set from 1990 to 1992. It’s interesting how it goes from a framed border, to a floating 3/4 border, to a border just on one side. The photos are great, but really showcased here is how by ’92, the photos were consistently about as close as you see here in this Action shot of John L. In a nice touch of subtleness, the red stripe indicates the AFC conference, while the blue indicates the NFC.
CARD: Action Packed 1990 ACQUIRED: TTM 2023, C/o Home SENT: 9/25 RECEIVED: 10/5 (10 days) FAILURE: TTM 2023, C/o Home
CAREER SNAPSHOT:
Kevin Murphy was selected in the second round of the 1986 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of Oklahoma.
Outstanding lineman for the Sooners who was converted to LB.
In ’88 he had 76 tackles and a 34 yard pick for a TD against the Packers.
Led the team in sacks in ’89 with 6.0 and had a career high 16 tackles against the Vikings that year.
Also had a career high and team leading 4 FF that season.
By ’90 the team boasted a wealth of linebacker talent resulting in Murphy only starting 7 contests.
Still managed 77 tackles, 4 sacks and 3 FF.
After playing for San Diego in 1992, joined the Seahawks for the 1993 season starting 10 games.
NOTES:
Not the biggest name here in Murphy but he was definitely a blue collar find. He doesn’t honestly pop up often so when he did I sent this card out immediately.
Well there’s a first for everything… I only failed on Kevin initially because he signed the penny sleeve! Ah well. I made it easy on him and resent the card minus the sleeve and he signed this sweet Action Packed card for me in no time flat.
Anthony Miller doesn’t sign TTM, so after not seeing anything for him since I got his autograph at a paid signing way back in…. 2015- I jumped at the chance to get him for a very affordable price on all my set needs that developed over the last few years. There might be one or two more in the late future but for right now I consider myself quite sated.
Most of the usual suspects are all here. The Fleer 1990 is very nice, and the ink was absorbed on the canvas quite nicely.
I think the 1989 Pro Set card was a featured photo on the Pro Set 1989 box somewhere. It was one of the lesser known error cards because eventually it was corrected. On the back of his card the stat line incorrectly states 14.8 as his TDs for 1988.
The Action Packed 1990 card also has an error that was uncorrected. In the blurb on the back of the card, Miller’s bio reads that he had 76 catches when he had 75.
I think it’s interesting that Miller’s Gameday card has an empty bleacher very close to him in the background. I suspect that this photo was taken at a training camp.
