Johnson, Anthony

Cards: Score Supplemental 1990, Score 1990, Action Packed Rookies 1990, Athletes in Action
Acquired: TTM C/o home, 2011

During the Lou Holtz era at Notre Dame, the team during the late 80s and early 90s always seemed to get their backs drafted, in a list that included: Mark Green, Ricky Watters, Tony Brooks, Rodney Culver, Reggie Brooks and Jerome Bettis.

Anthony Johnson would also be drafted as well by the Indianapolis Colts during the second round of the 1990 draft to go with a new offensive talent  in Jeff George, Stacey Simmons,  and Ken Clark. While his rookie season would be fairly non-existent, in 1991 Johnson would demonstrate his effectiveness as a fullback, blocker and receiver out of the backfield for the Colts registering 42 catches. After the departure of Eric Dickerson in 1992, Anthony would rush for 552 yards and make 49 receptions for 517 yards. In 1993, he’d chip in another 300 sub yard season rushing and almost 450 yards receiving, and then sign in 1994 with the Jets. After a quiet 1994, Johnson would be signed by the Chicago Bears in 1995, but play in only 8 games before being cut and picked up by the expansion Carolina Panthers.  He’d resign with the Panthers in 1996 and rejuvenate his career totalling his first 1000 yard season rushing after 6 seasons.  He’d also be the franchise’s first 1000 yard rusher in the second season of the Panthers existence. Johnson would return to the bench in 1997, but remain on the roster of the Panthers through 1999, and then play one final season with the Jaguars in 2000.

Since retirement Johnson has served the Lord, and at last check had been working as a chaplain for the Jaguars. He signed these three cards in a little over 10 days for me via his home address in Jacksonville and even included one of his Athletes in Action cards. I really liked his Action Packed Rookies and Score Supplemental cards, and was really happy to put these into the books even though Johnson has a surprisingly humble autograph. He signed his full autograph on the Action Packed card, and then only AJ for the remainder of them. In addition he penned all of them with “Jesus” following the autograph.

Ambrose, Ashley

Card: StarPics 1992
Acquired: TTM 1993, Colts Blitz

As the 1992 draft dawned, the Colts determined to fix their woeful defense, drafted Steve Emtman and Quentin Coryatt with the first two picks of the draft. They’d turn around at the top of round 2 and grab 1992 Ashley Ambrose from Mississippi Valley State.  He was a nice find at the top of round 2- well once he left the Colts. Over 4 seasons, from 1992-1995 Ashley would make 5 interceptions, 9 fumble recoveries and 94 tackles.

In 1996 Ashley signed with the Bengals, and immediately contributed with an All Pro season. Starting all 16 games for the first time in his career Ashley made 8 picks and 44 tackles. Ambrose would never be on the bench again for the remainder of his career. He’d play for the Bengals 2 more seasons before signing with the New Orleans Saints, making 6 more picks, before heading out to Atlanta for 4 more seasons. In Atlanta, Ambrose would make 12 interceptions for 207 yards, before heading back to New Orleans for the 2003 and 2004 season before retiring.

Ambrose has gone into coaching where he worked for the Colorado Buffaloes. Currently Ashley is defensive backs coach at California. I’ve dug up a few cards of Ashley, that I missed out on sending to him back in 1992 including his Action Packed Rookies and GameDay cards that I may send to him on a later date.

Donaldson, Ray

Card: Pro Set 1990
Acquired: TTM 1992, Colts Blitz

After an impressive career at Georgia, Ray Donaldson was originally a second round choice of the Baltimore Colts back in 1980.  He would take over the starting duties at the postion in 1981 and saw the team through the final years in Baltimore, the Eric Dickerson years and up through the beginning of the Jeff George era. He’d play for the Colts franchise through 1992, earning a Pro Bowl Nod from 1986-1989.  In 1993 Ray signed with the Seahawks playing for the team through the end of the 1994 season. He’d then sign with the Dallas Cowboys, replacing departed Mark Stepnoski playing two additional seasons. Ray would experience a late career renaissance and return to the Pro Bowl in 1995 and 1996 before retiring with 17 seasons under his belt.

In 2006, Donaldson was honored with an induction into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.  His 184 games started ranks 4th on the Colts all time list and 1st among linemen for the franchise. A 6 time Pro Bowler Ray Donaldson lives in Indianapolis and is currently a high school football coach. He holds the odd accomplishment of being the first African-American football player to play center.
