Peguese, Willis

Acquired: In Person, Houston Oilers Training Camp 1991.

Willis Peguese was drafted by the Houston Oilers from the University of Miami with their 3rd round pick. The Oilers on their previous draft selection had selected Jeff Alm DT from Notre Dame, so this pick came with some surprise because the Oilers had a  few more pressing needs. Defensive coordinator Jim Eddy envisioned Willis as their solution at right defensive end, but instead Peguese found himself buried on a very talented depth chart. Things only got worse when the Oilers traded for Lee Williams from the Chargers. Willis would rarely get playing time beyond the preseason and was cut in 1992. He signed with the Colts and played with them for 2 seasons, notching 2 sacks and retired soon thereafter. Currently Willis runs Pro Player Protection Inc, out of the Palm Beach/ Miami Florida area.

Mouse Davis shrewdly selected Kip Lewis in the WLAF supplemental draft from run oriented Arizona, (where Kip made 20 catches in his career,) and slapped him into the Run ‘N Shoot offense of the New York New Jersey Knights.   Fighting off nagging injuries in 1991, Kip still notched a 64 yard score against the Riders and 29 catches on the season. In 1992, Kip benefited from a full season under the offense and the quarterback play of Reggie Slack, to rank 1st on the team, and 7th in the WLAF with 46 receptions.  Kip continued to be involved in football after the reorganization of the WLAF when the league finished the 1992 season, signing briefly with the Detroit Lions. Afterwards, Lewis jumped into a career in broadcasting, where he’s been ever since, working with the fledgling XFL as a sideline reporter for TNN, the Indianapolis Colts, and also as a sports reporter. I was able to locate Kip at Comcast Sportsnet where he is currently at. Kip signed all 3 cards and attached a nice thank you apologizing for the wait because it had been in his coat pocket the whole time. 🙂

Rentie, Caesar

For all of the football junkies out there Caesar Rentie is famous because he was the first player drafted in the WLAF.  Originally a 7th round choice of the Chicago Bears, Rentie played 5 games for the Bears in 1988, and then went Plan B to the Bills and Colts before being taken by the WLAF.  The son of deaf-mute parents, Rentie has faced adversity all his life. Playing for the Knights, Rentie provided valuable protection and excellent run blocking for Eric Wilkerson in 1991. He’d play part of the season for the Knights again in 1992, finishing up the season on the squad of the Birmingham Fire.

After the league restructured in 1992, Caesar felt a higher calling and decided to leave football where he then became an intern in pastoral care at Methodist Mansfield Medical Center and as of this post is affiliated with Arcadia Park UMC in Dallas as a Senior Pastor. I sent off for Caesar’s autograph during the 1992 season to the NY/NJ Knights. I got a fairly quick response and was pleased to get his autograph on his Proset card.
