The venerable Bruce Armstrong really nailed down the right/ left tackle positions for New England throughout the late 80s and into the 1990s, so much so that he was nominated for the NFL HoF in 2011, and the Patriot organization retired his number. Armstrong over his storied career played in a franchise high 212 games. Amazingly enough he started as a tight end at Louisville, before switching over to tackle as a Senior- where he allowed zero sacks. Armstrong had it all over his career with the Patriots, combining speed, power, and durability, making him a formidable pass and run blocker.

Merv Corning’s work on the Pro Set Superbowl cards were  not enough, so the company had him come back to create the All Pro subset in 1991. He also chipped in some spot work on ProLine as well. While I was never a fan of ProSet 1992’s break in style between the two series that year, they still had some pretty good photos littering the set and this card with the red pants is a really nice throwback issue the Patriots briefly did.  A solid signer, the venerable Armstrong boasts a 90% response rate (250+ attempts) through 2015.

Campbell, Jesse

A second round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles out of NC State, Jesse Campbell was a 3 year starter and 1st Team All ACC Member for the Wolfpack, notching 7 interceptions, 187 tackles, and 5 sacks over his career.  A fearsome hitter, Campbell also forced an impressive 15 fumbles punishing receivers and runners alike with a linebacker’s abandon.   He’d sustain a knee cartilage injury before making it to the regular season and spend his first season on IR.

In 1992 the Eagles were going in a new direction under head coach Rich Kotite and defensive coordinator Bud Carson. While Campbell was given ample time to impress in camp, it became a numbers game, and Carson’s defense requires safeties that can cover and places a premium on cornerbacks. Jesse was cut when the Eagles opted to resign corner Eric Allen.  He’d sign with the rival New York Giants and push his way into a starting job by 1994.  Campbell played with the Giants through 1996, before finishing out his career with the Redskins over the next two years, retiring in 1999.

He’s dabbled in coaching and is currently involved in school administration.

McDaniel, Terry

A first round draft choice in 1988 out of Tennessee by the then Los Angeles Raiders, Terry McDaniel was originally a track man and sprinter in college with reputed 4.3 speed that earned All-American Honors in 1988.  He moved from WR to DB during his Sophomore campaign at Tennessee and displayed a natural and fluid ability to blanket receivers.  Terry adjusted quickly to the pro game, but broke his leg in the second game of his rookie season in LA.  At that time he was the first Raider rookie to start the season opener in the secondary over the last 17 years. He returned in 1989 and pulled pset90 mcdanieldown 3 interceptions. In 1990 McDaniel started the season on the sidelines, but came off the bench in the opener to key team’s victory over the Denver Broncos.  A dominating man to man cover back, McDaniel paired with Lionel Washington to make teams fear the Raiders secondary. Terry matured and from 1992 to 1996 he earned Pro Bowl honors. His best season perhaps came in 1994, when he recorded 7 interceptions  for 103 yards and 2 TDs to go along with 3 fumble recoveries. Terry played for the Raiders through the 1997 season, before playing 9 final contests on the Seahawks in 1998. Always dangerous, McDaniel had 8 career touchdowns playing defense, with 6 on interceptions and 2 on fumble recoveries.

Another member of Tecmo Superbowl, McDaniel’s speed and ball hawking skills were well represented by the game. Writing him care of the church ministry he works for, he signed my cards and refused my donation. He inscribed these two cards with a Bible verse from Proverbs 3: 5-6.
