Sherman, Richard

Cards: Panini Prestige 2015, Score 2017 Gold
Acquired: TTM 2020, C/o The San Fransisco 49ers

Richard Sherman when he arrived at Stanford was actually a WR. He in fact caught 81 passes for 1340 yards and 7 TDs over his Freshman and Sophomore campaigns in 2006 and 2007. He’d switch to CB during 2009 and start climbing the depth chart. Sherman posted 113 total tackles and 6 interceptions for 82 yards and a TD. Richard was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the 5th round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Richard again climbed the depth chart and started 10 games his rookie year. He was named to multiple rookie teams at the end of the season. Quickly establishing himself as one of the premier defensive backs in the league, he posted 8 interceptions and 24 pass deflections (league leader) in 2012- earning his first of three consecutive All-Pro Nominations, as a member of the Seahawks secondary, the feared ‘Legion of Boom’. 2013 saw him leading the NFL in interceptions with 8, as 2014 saw him earn his final nod as teams threw away from him with regularity and respect. Richard continued to see Pro Bowl nominations through the 2016 season.

As the Legion began breaking up, Richard saw free agency in 2018. It would come as a stunner to Seahawks fans as he joined the division rival San Fransisco 49ers. He returned to Pro Bowl form in 2019 as Sherman pulled down 3 interceptions for 65 yards and a TD, along with 31 pass deflections.

I wrote Richard sort of on a whim. I had this really nice Panini Contenders card, and I stumbled over the Score card as I was thinking about it. I took it as a sign and went for it, mailing to the 49ers facility. I was very lucky to see a response in a bit under 60 days.

Edwards, Braylon

Cards: Score 2009, Score 2009 Franchise, Donruss Rookies & Stars 2009 Gold Patch

Braylon was a phenom at Michigan playing WR for the Wolverines from 2001 to 2004. He’d cross over the 1,000 yard barrier in 2002, 2003, and 2004. He’d post 97 receptions for 1,330 yards and 15 TDs in his Senior campaign as he won the Bilitnikoff award as the nation’s best receiver. With great speed and hands, Edwards was considered a top flight blue chip prospect

Braylon was drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the 3rd overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. After a rough rookie debut thanks to a brief holdout and a staph infection, Braylon took about half the season to break into the starting lineup. He posted 512 yards on 32 catches, 3 TDs, including an 80 yard bomb. In 2006, Braylon’s production began to ramp up with 884 yards and 6 TDs. His most impressive season came in 2007 when he rolled up 80 catches for 1,289 yards and 16 TDs earning a Pro Bowl nod. After a very difficult 2008 season in which Braylon saw his production drop to 873 yards on 55 receptions, he’d be traded 5 games into the 2009 season to the New York Jets. Braylon’s 2010 season saw him barely miss the 1,000 yard mark for the second time in his career with 53 catches for 904 yards and 7 TDs.

He then spent the next 3 years bouncing around the league, playing for the 49ers, Seahawks and Jets before retiring. Braylon was an exciting talent in the league, and that was evidenced in his statistics. In six of his 10 seasons, he had long catches of 65 or greater.

I had gotten the Donruss Rookies & Stars 2009 Gold patch and these Score cards of Braylon way back in 2012 or 2013 during Christmastime. I loved the Donruss card but was ultimately disappointed that I did not pull an autograph from the hobby box. I thought there was no chance I’d ever get it signed. So I was very surprised to see Braylon Edwards signing through the mail in 2020, but I was sorta slow footed getting these cards out the door. After a few nail biting weeks, he signed all three of these beautiful cards.

Forsett, Justin

Card: Score Signatures 2010
Acquired: COMC, 2020

I had been wanting Justin Forsett for sometime on a few cards, but being that he doesn’t sign through the mail from what I saw, so I put him on my list to pick up a certified of when the price was right. With COVID in full swing, COMC ran an aggressive sale on their inventory, so I was able to get Justin with a stack of other autographs that I was after. -I just didn’t expect this gem of a Score 2010 to appear.

Not to mention that Justin was a hero to me for shoring up my lineup during his rookie year in my fantasy league. I grabbed him with two to three games left in the season, and he provided me with a win to help propel me towards the championship in 2009. Later as a brief member of the Houston Texans he blew past the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day in a very memorable game.

Justin had a pretty decent 4 years at Cal playing for the Golden Bears from 2004-2007. He rushed 567 times for 3220 yards and 26 TDs, and caught 41 passes for 386 yards and a TD. Despite his solid output at Cal, Forsett was not selected until the 7th round of the 2008 NFL Draft, and bounced on and off the roster of the Seahawks and Colts. Returning back to the Seahawks in 2009, he played in all 16 games, posting up 619 yards on 114 carries, scoring 4 times, and catching 41 passes. He’d spend the next two years with the team, as his playing time slowly dwindled. Eventually Forsett was allowed to walk after the 2011 season.

Justin signed with the Houston Texans in 2012. With Arian Foster the primary back in the lineup, Ben Tate and Forsett would fight over playing time as his backup. As a great change of pace, Forsett rushed 63 times for 374 yards and an 81 yard TD against the Lions. Disappointingly, he didn’t resign with the Texans after the season, electing to spend 2013 with the Jaguars.

Justin’s final act in the NFL was primarily with the Baltimore Ravens. He’d earn his only Pro Bowl nod in 2014 rushing 235 times for 1266 yards and 8 touchdowns, catching 44 passes for 263 yards as a replacement for Ray Rice. An injury plagued 2015 saw his numbers dip. In 10 games, his numbers dropped to 641 yards on 151 carries. He’d be released during the 2016 season, spending time with the Lions and the Broncos.

Forsett retired in 2017. An inventor, he’s come up with quite a few successful ideas, attracting former NFL players as investors.
