Steve Israel played college ball at Pittsburgh and set the world on fire his senior season when he recorded 6 interceptions, returning one of them for a touchdown.  With Jerry Gray signing with the Houston Oilers in 1992, the Rams were in the market for another defensive back. After recently being exposed with regularity by the 49ers receiving corps, Los Angeles needed to keep the arms war going by adding fresh blood to the back four. The Rams selected Steve with the second overall pick of the second round. A speed merchant, Steve started 12 games in 1993, but otherwise was used primarily as the Rams nickle back throughout his 3 year tenure with Los Angeles.  During the Summer he’d be waived by the team, but picked up shortly there after by the 49ers, who needing depth at the position after a recent spate of injuries hit the squad.  He’d make his first career interception against the Atlanta Falcons in 1996.  In 1997, Steve signed with the New England Patriots and play there for another 3 seasons. Steve marked his best season as a pro in ’98 recording 3 interceptions and 2 sacks in 7 starts.  He’d play one final season in New Orleans in 2001 before retiring during camp in 2002 with the Carolina Panthers.  Currently Steve lives in North Carolina and does commentary for ESPNU.

Koy, Ted

Ted Koy followed in the family footsteps after his brother Ernie and father Ernie Sr. who also played football at the University of Texas.  He was the captain of the Longhorns’ undefeated National Championship squad from 1969 and played alongside such players as James Street, Jim Bertelsen, Steve Worster, and Cotton Speyrer in Coach Darrell Royal‘s wishbone offense. Ted would plow ahead for 441 yards and 4 touchdowns that utud11 ted koy ATAyear and was one of the members of the backfield when the wishbone was introduced in 1968. Currently his 1,397 career rushing yards rank 28th all-time at Texas.

The Oakland Raiders drafted Ted with their second round pick in 1970 but he did not see the playing field. In 1971, Koy joined the Buffalo Bills where he saw action at the tight end position. He played for them over the next 3 additional seasons, recording 151 yards from scrimmage and 1 receiving touchdown.

Ted received his veterinarian medicine degree in 1980 from Texas A&M and runs an animal clinic in Georgetown, Texas. He and the other members of Texas’ 1969 National Championship team remain close to this day and many of them surprisingly reside in the Austin area.  Ted is as good a signer as his brother Ernie, and signed these 3 cards in 4 days as well.

Anderson, Ottis ‘OJ’ (2)

Probably one of the worst autographs I ever received TTM from a player was from Ottis Anderson, so it came as quite a surprise when I pulled an autograph from him out of one of the Target Autograph Memorabilia packs, but also because it had his full autograph. – Not just his first name. A very nice pull.

I actually had this Sports Illustrated at some point, and while it’s not a bad looking card, I partially understand why Fleer went the way of the do do, with sets like these. Previously I had received one of these Fleer Sports Illustrated cards from Roger Craig, but the design and look is so stale, that I thought these were thrown together promotionals. They didn’t even bother to remove the bar code or price from the original magazine.

The University of Miami’s, (FL) all time leading rusher at the time of his graduation, Ottis racked up 3331 yards, -including 1,266 his Senior season. He went on to have a prestigious career with the St. Louis Cardinals and earn NFL RotY Honors in 1979. In 1986 the Cardinals cut Anderson, thanks to the abuse of heavy running all those years. He’d make a comeback, and help the Giants win Super Bowl XXV against the Bills.
