With an outstanding selection, I felt it was appropriate to finish up on James’ cards I still needed. The Pro Set 1989 is an easy one to pick out, but recently I’ve gotten more interested in the much maligned Topps 1990 set. The 1000 Yard Club subset runs a bit over 30 deep if I remember correctly. It really stands out from the base set with its yellow border, glossy front, and an action shot on the front.
I’ve been building up slowly on the Pro Set 1990 Pro Bowl set, with a fair amount more of the AFC squad completed. It’s nothing that I’m truly actively trying to get, but I’m sort of falling into.
Tre Walker played WR at San Jose St from 2017-2020.
His breakout year came as Junior when he had 79 receptions for 1161 yards and 2 TDs.
Finished college career with 189 receptions for 2790 yards and 12 TDs.
Signed as an UDFA by the Buffalo Bills following the 2021 Draft, but did not make the squad.
In 2022, was selected in the 12th round of the USFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Maulers.
Despite the team’s offensive struggles, Tre recorded 33 receptions for 362 yards and a touchdown.
Had 359 all purpose yards (200 receiving, 17 rushing, and 142 in kick returns) in the 2023 season, despite missing a portion of the season due to injury.
Although resigned by the Maulers for 2024, the USFL merged with the XFL and Pittsburgh was not retained.
NOTES:
A nice start to my USFL card set, Tre sent me a nice note and wrote on my card ‘much love’. He still has gas in the tank and I hope he latches on with a new team soon.
My friend Mark (Mark’s Signing Bonus), sent me a box of the USFL to get me started, so I figured why not and dove right in to getting them autographed. While the set is pretty small, there are still some active players in the league who are now in the UFL.
Mike Merriweather played linebacker for Pacific from 1978-’81.
Playing in 33 contests he had 4 interceptions for 67 yards and a TD.
Third round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1982.
After suiting up for 9 contests in ’82 became a full-time starter in 1983.
Dominant linebacker, had an impressive run from 1984-’86.
Had a career high 15 sacks in 1985.
After the shortened ’87 strike season, Merriweather held out the entire 1988 season.
He’d be traded in 1989 to the Minnesota Vikings.
Returned to form, starting 63 games with 7 picks, and 7 fumble recoveries.
Finished out career splitting the 1993 season with the Packers and Jets.
ACCOLADES:
Pro Bowl 1984-’86
Pacific Athletics Hall of Fame
Skybox 1992, #158
NOTES:
Mike had some great cards along the way. Total intimidator shots- but these as set needs definitely came first. He was kind enough to sign all of these with a small donation, personalizing each one- which I don’t mind at all. I remember getting Mike’s 1989 Pro Set card as a kid. I was pretty disappointed that he was in his off season gear.
Mike was one of a group of rare players who challenged the NFL’s bargaining contract by sitting out the entire ’88 season from the Steelers, until he forced the trade in 1989 that sent him to Minnesota.
